The availability of organelle genome sequences of bryophytes provides opportunity to mine this data. Therefore in this study microsatellites in chloroplast genome sequence of Pellia endiviifolia (Accession number: NC_019628), downloaded from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in fasta format, were identified. The sequence was mined with the help of MISA, a Perl script, to detect microsatellites. In total, 16 perfect microsatellites were identified in 120.546 kb sequence mined. An average length of 14.94 bp was calculated for mined microsatellites with a density of 1 SSR/7.09 kb. Depending on the repeat units, the length of microsatellites ranged from 12 to 18 bp. Tetranucleotides (7, 43.75%) were the most frequent repeat type, followed by mononucleotide (3, 18.75%) repeats. Dinucleotide, trinucleotide and pentanucleotide repeats were found with equal frequency (2, 12.5%). Interestingly, hexanucleotide repeats were completely absent in chloroplast genome of Pellia endiviifolia.

Coscinodon humilis was described by Milde from mica schist in the Passeiertal NE Merano (formerly southern Tyrolia in Austria, hence cited as Austria by Greven 1995. now Alto Adige in Italy). Limpricht (1890) regarded it as “verkümmerte Form von C. cribrosus”, and although Mönkemeyer (1927) still cited it, the species got forgotten by the time. Thus the species was no more mentioned by Corley et al (1981) in the European checklist and therefore no more included by Frey et al. (1995) in the German edition of the “Moos- und Farnpflanzen Europas”. Greven (1995) re-established the species in his treatment of Grimmia (and related genera) in Europe. Therefore Frey et al. (2006) included the species, which was, however, not keyed out. Finally Hill et al. (2006) listed it again in the new European checklist as a good species.

Es werden 12 tropische Moosarten (alles nur Laubmoose) aufgeführt, welche in den Tropen (vorwiegend den Neotropen) eine geschlossene Verbreitung haben, in Europa aber nur lokal oder regional begrenzt vorkommen. Sie belegen die Möglichkeit der transkontinentalen Fernverbreitung von Moosen. Der Zeitpunkt als auch die Art und Weise der Verbreitung wird diskutieert.

Mining of simple sequence repeats in chloroplast genome of a parasitic liverwort: Aneura mirabilis

Aneura mirabilis is a parasitic liverwort with a chloroplast genome size of 108007 bp. In this study simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were detected using bioinformatics approch in plastid genome of Aneura mirabilis. Due to its small genome size only 19 repeats were detected showing a density of 1 SSR/5.68 kb. The length of SSRs ranged from 12 to 20 bp. Mononucleotide repeats were the most frequent repeat type (36.84%) followed by tetranucleotide repeats (31.58%). Moreover hexanucleotide repeats were absent in chloroplast genome sequence of Aneura mirabilis.

The identity of Braunia alopecura (Brid.) Limpr. with Braunia secunda (Hook.) Bruch & Schimp.

Braunia alopecura, originally regarded as species endemic to the Southern Alps, later known in addition from the the Cape Verde Islands and recently reported from the Indohimalaya, has revealed to be identical with the neotropical Braunia secunda. This is another case of an American species in the Southern Alps and in Europe in general, as well as an example of possible long distance dispersal.

The location of Ticino in the southern Alps with an altitudinal range from 200 to more than 3000 m generates a high biodiversity of bryophytes, however, in addition, a mixture of mediterranean elements (caused by mild temperatures), atlantic elements (caused by high precipitation) and especially insubrian elements (confined to the Southern Alps) has attracted many famous bryologists over the past 150 years and make this region to a real bryological hot spot. Six of the 7 insubrian species are mainly distributed in North America. Their presence in the Southern Alps is correlated with a certain geological formation and their origin is not clear.

Anomalies in female receptacle of Plagiochasma appendiculatum Lehm. & Lindenb.- A report from J&K.

The genus Plagiochasma belonging to the order Marchantiales has been very well worked out with respect to the structure and development of male and female receptacles. In the present paper, the author reports abnormalities in archegoniophores along with the anatomical details of the same. This report from J&K is altogether new.

Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial activity of methanolic extract and phenolic compounds of a liverwort, Reboulia hemispherica was carried out by Agar well diffusion technique. The Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive than the Gram negative ones, while the fungal species were least sensitive. R. hemispherica extract exhibited best results against Staphylococcus aureus, although it was active against all tested microbes. The antimicrobial activity increased with the increase in the concentration of the extract except in Klebsiella sp. S. aureus, E. faecalis and Bacillus cereus were inhibited more by the crude methanol extract of R. hemispherica than the phenolic compounds isolated from the extract. A. niger was inhibited equally by the crude methanol extract as well as the phenolic compounds. B. subtilis, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, K. sp. and P. notatum were inhibited more by phenolic compounds than the crude methanol extract of R. hemispherica. Thus phenolic compounds of R. hemispherica should be studied further for use as antimicrobial agent.

Microsatellites also known as simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are short repeat motifs (1-6 bp) found in DNA sequences Detection of microsatellites is important for the development of molecular markers and to study the mapping of traits of economic, medical or ecological interest. In the present study, chloroplast genome sequence of Anthoceros formosae, downloaded from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) was mined with the help of MISA tool to detect SSRs in chloroplast genome (cpSSRs). A total of 67 SSRs were detected with a density of 1 SSR/2.4 kb in 161.162 kb sequence mined. Depending on the repeat units, the length of SSRs ranged from 12 to 18 bp for mono-, 14 to 46 bp for di-, 12 to 27 bp for tri-, 12 to 20 bp for tetra and 18 bp for hexa-nucleotide repeats. Mononucleotide repeats were the most frequent repeat type (35.82%) followed by dinucleotide repeats (25.37%). Penta-nucleotide repeats were not detected in chloroplast genome sequence of Anthoceros formosae.

Scanning electron microscope analyses of sporoderm of 7 species of 3 genera of Marchantiales are presented in this study. In the studied species, sporoderm exhibit a broad range of morphology and have taxonomic specificity. The structurally rigid sporoderms have specific sculpturing and characteristic patterning. Peculiar architectures are found in different taxa, which revealed that and stable architectures may be present within an order. Sporoderms usually have specific surface markings which are often one of the best parameters to identify any species.

Thalloid liverworts with unistratose thallus margins are easily determined as Aneura maxima, which shall be identified by this character. However, forms of Pellia epiphylla and P. endiviifolia grown under humid conditions can have an unistratose undulate thallus margin and thus confused with the latter. Pellia species can, however, be distinguished from Aneura by the presence of slime hairs vz. slime papillae, which are described and illustrated here.

Hot spots are characterized by the occurrence of „hot“ species, rare, endangered, phytogeographically (for example highly disjunct) or ecologically interesting species (for example heavy metal species). The Apuanian Alps (ital. Alpi Apuani) are a place of extraordinary botanical and also bryological interest. Although situated far from the west coast of Europe, many atlantic species are found there, which have isolated occurrences and show up next in Asturias, Macaronesia. Ireland or Scotland. Representative of the oceanic element in the bryoflora are Dumortiera hirsuta, Lejeunea lamacerina, Lophocolea fragrans, Plagiochila exigua, P. bifaria, Saccogyna viticulosa, Harpalejeunea ovata and Marchesinia mackaii, supplemented by ferns such as Trichomanes speciosum and Hymenophyllum tunbrigense (Cortini-Pedrotti et al. 1992). Reasons for the presence of such species in Italy are the extraordinary climatic conditions. Situated directly along the Meditrerranean Sea, the climate is mild and due to depressions in the gulf of Genova, the rain is caught by the mountains resulting in a high precipitation of about 1400 at the foot of the region and more than 3000 mm in the summit region. This does, however, not explain whether these species are relics from the Tertiary or dispersed from the W-coast of Europe after the Pleistocene glaciations.

In the present study the level of S, Cu, Cr, Cd, Zn, Pb and Cr was estimated in samples of the common thalloid liverwort Plagiochasma rupestre (G. Frost) Stephani, from Ranthambhore National park, Rajasthan (India). High metallic load was observed both in substrate as well as in plant tissue at locations adjacent to higher vehicular load, during winter the metallic content is highest, followed by summer and monsoon season. Elemental concentration in substrate for Plagiochasma rupestre was in the order of Zn> S> Pb> Cu> Cd> Cr, while in plant tissue it showed S> Zn> Pb> Cu> Cd> Cr, which is indicative of air borne trace elemental load. Quantitative analysis of these elements in vegetative thalli of Plagiochasma rupestre and the substrate showed an increase in metallic content during winter, which reveals the significance of this liverwort as a biological sink of mineral elements present in the soil and air and may provide an important tool in estimation of both aerial pollution and mineral enrichment in soil.

A boat dug out of a Alnus (alder) trunk about 4,000 years ago had the space between the transom (stern) board and the slot cut in the hull caulked with mosses principally a mass of Anomodon viticulosus but there were thirteen other mosses and one liverwort. The mosses allow the tentative deduction that the boat may not have been caulked at Degersee or, if caulked there, the mosses had been gathered elsewhere in the vicinity and brought to the boat.

Dicranodontium didymodon, a species described from the Himalaya was recently reported from Spain. It has been distinguished from D. denudatum by a smooth subula. A reexamination of the type of this species revealed no additional characters which would support the recognition of a separate species. Therefore D. didymodon is synonymised with D. denudatum. The specimen from Spain is referred to D. denudatum var. glabrum, which differs from D. didymodon by larger stature and lack of brood leaves.

In the past, many bryophyte species were regarded as endemic to the Alps. Herzog listed more than 70 examples. Many of them are micro-endemisms or merely alpine forms of other species (Leptodontium styriacum) and not of taxanomic value, or considered as relics from the last interglacial period, although the Alps were covered by glaciers during the last ice age, which made a survival almost impossible, especially for forest species and epiphytes. Several of these species turned out to occur as well in Asia (Distichophyllum carinatum) or were described from there under a different name (Tayloria rudolphiana as T. delavayi). So far, one important species, Brotherella lorentziana, remained unsolved. A recent study revealed that this species is present in Asia, where it is known as B. henonii. At the present state of knowledge, five species namely Herbertus sendtneri, Riccia breidleri, Barbula bicolor, Marsupella ramosa and Trochobryum carniolicum must still be considered as endemic.

Die Energiedispersive Röntgenspektroskopie (EDX) ist so empfindlich, dass sie physiologische Chloridwerte bei Moosen und Gefäßpflanzen leicht erfassen kann. Bei dem halophilen Moos Desmatodon heimii werden hohe Cl-Werte in stoffwechselaktiven Teilen (unreife Sporogone) wie auch in abgestorbenen und abgestoßenen Blättern nachgewiesen. Als Vergleich zu salztoleranten Gefäßpflanzen diente die Salzsode (Suaeda maritima (L.) DUMORT.).

During the analysis of collections made by the author and company in Madikeri (Coorg) district the need of an updated checklist became eminent. Literature studies were carried out alongside with the identification of specimen. Liverworts were added to the existing checklist of mosses of Karnataka. Location information of previous publications has been critically revised and reflected in the current list. An extended history of the bryological exploration of the state of Karnataka is given.

Die Beobachtung einer verbreiteten Sippe aus dem Bryum capillare Komplex mit nicht schraubig zusammengedrehten Blättern, nicht austretender Rippe und schmalem Blattsaum warf die Frage auf, ob es sich dabei um einen Genotyp handelt und wenn ja, welchen Namen er tragen muss. Zunächst wurde geklärt, dass die Nominatform von Bryum capillare Pflanzen mit stark schraubig zusammengedrehten Blättern, austretender Rippe und starkem Blattsaum umfasst, die genannte Sippe also nicht dazu gehört. Ein Versuch belegte, dass die Nominatform in hyperhygrischer Kultur unverändert blieb, die abweichende Sippe also keine Hygromorphose oder durch Übergänge mit der Nominatform verbunden ist. Sie war von Schimper als Bryum capillare var. α bezeichnet worden und wird hier als var. schimperi legitimisiert. Gleichzeitig wird die im Flachland und Mittelgebirge auf basischen Felsen und Mauer beheimatete Sippe aus dem Bryum capillare Komplex, welche fälschlicherweise als Bryum elegans bezeichnet wurde, als Bryum capillare var. simile neu beschrieben.

During the past years, Fontinalis specimens with round, concave leaves were collected in Germany and Spain, which were named as F. antipyretica var. mollis. A comparison with the type of F. mollis revealed that they are not identical and accordingly are described as new variety, F. antiypretica var. rotundifolia.

The family Geocalycaceae are one of the largest families of leafy liverworts in India consisting of 9 genera and 27 species belongs to two subfamilies. Present study reports the distribution of members of this family in Kerala state. In Kerala the family Geocalycaceae are represented by 11 species belonging to three genera viz., Heteroscyphus (6 species), Chiloscyphus (3 species) and Lophocolea (2 species). Among these Chiloscyphus muricatus and Heteroscyphus bescherellei are new record of occurrence for the state of Kerala.

Neue Nachweise von Baltischem Bernstein durch den zweiten Autor zeigten mehrere Moose und Lebermoose, die beschrieben werden, und hier dargestellt sind. Unter den Lebermoosen war eine zweite Aufzeichnung von Ptilidium pulcherrimum sowie der Jungermannia berendtii, Aufzeichnungen von Cylindrocolea dimorpha in drei verschiedenen Proben und Frullania Baltica. Die Moose beinhalten eine unbekannte Art, die neu beschrieben wird als Ditrichites ignotus.

Reproduction in bryophytes is by asexual as well as sexual means. Asexual reproduction is a significant adaptation to special environments and occurs by a large variety of methods. During the last few decades, many of the bryophytes, particularly the dioecious ones are reported to have registered a decline in their fertile populations. There is, therefore, a need to understand the reasons for their disappearance.

Der Südrand des Kyffhäuser im nördlichen Thüringen ist eine der trockensten (500 mm Jahresniederschlag) und wärmsten (10° Jahresmitteltemperatur) Regionen Deutschlands. Zudem wird er von Zechstein-Gipsen gebildet, die sehr wasserdurchlässig sind und nur eine geringe Bodenauflage haben, sodass große Partien von Natur aus waldfrei sind. Daraus resultiert eine für Deutschland ziemlich einzigartige Vegetation, die nur in Anklängen auch im Südharz und im Unstruttal zu finden ist. Sie besteht aus kontinentalen Steppenelementen (Stipa, Adonis, Mannia fragrans), mediterranen Elementen (Riccia ciliifera, Tortula brevissima, Tortula revolvens, letztere von Reimers als Wüsten-Steppenmoose bezeichnet) und arktisch-alpinen Elementen (Athalamya hyalina, Tortella densa).

Growth of nine species of cyanobacteria was observed on eight species of bryophytes (thalloid liverworts and mosses) growing in the polyhouse, Bryophyte conservatory (Moss House), at National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, India. Bryophytes were cultured in the laboratory and transferred to polyhouse for hardening and acclimatization. Cyanobacterial growth was observed on the bryophytes as a contamination due to which there was suppression of bryophyte growth. It was evident that cyanobacteria played a significant role of allelopathy.

The present study was conducted using chloroplast and mitochondrial genome sequences of plants to gain insight on evolutionary relationship of bryophytes. The representative taxa were selected considering the availability of both organelle genome sequences. Phylogenetic analysis using combined data from chloroplast and mitochondrial sequences infer paraphyly of bryophytes.

The present contribution revealed the occurrence of Hypnum plumaeforme Wilson belonging to family Hypnaceae (Bryopsida) for the first time in Munsiyari region of Uttarakhand state, which is a new addition to the bryoflora of Western Himalayas. Earlier this species was known only from eastern Himalayas (Nepal).

Les Vosges appartiennent, du point de vue bryologique, aux régions de l’Europe moyenne les plus riches et les plus intéressantes en espèces. Malheureusement, il manquait pour les présenter une flore synthétique. En 1989, l’auteur avait publié à son compte une première édition en 100 exemplaires d’une Bryoflore des Vosges dans laquelle, pour la première fois, toute la littérature bryologique avait été exploitée et enrichie par ses données personnelles. Celle-ci avait été complétée par un carroyage qui donnait ainsi un aperçu de la connaissance bryologique de cette région. Treize ans plus tard, une deuxième édition de ce travail fut publiée dans la revue « Limprichtia ». Les deux éditions furent traduites en français parce qu’il était important qu’une flore régionale portant sur une partie du territoire de la France soit publiée dans la langue de ce pays. Le texte de la première édition avait été traduit par une collaboratrice de l’auteur et fut revue par René Schumacker. Les compléments apportés au texte de la deuxième édition ont été traduits par Michael Häussler , René Schumacker en ayant à nouveau revu la traduction. Francis Bick a revu le texte et a traduit les nouvelles adjonctions apportées à la Bryoflore des Vosges à l’occasion de cette troisième édition.

The present study is a compilation of moss flora of Western Himalayas (India). This compilation listed 745 species of mosses, belonging to 19 orders; 55 families and 230 genera. Out of these 17 species have been reported endemic from Western Himalayas. 196 species have been synonymized and status of 86 species is still doubtful i.e. unresolved name. At present out of 745 only 463 species are validly known from this mountain range of India

Im Rahmen einer jetzt schon ganzen Reihe von Gebietsmonographien soll hier die Moosflora ausgewählter „hot spots“ im Lahntal zusammengestellt werden. Grund ist, dass – wie schon früher erwähnt – eine einfache Möglichkeit eröffnet werden soll, sich ohne große Recherchen über die Besonderheiten der deutschen Moosflora zu informieren, zumal aber auch der Personenkreis, der solche Zusammenstellungen erbingen kann, insbesondere aus eigener Anschauung, immer kleiner wird und bei der deutlichen Abnahme von floristisch ausgebildeten Bryologen oder lokalfloritsisch orientierten Mooskennern eine Zusammenstellung von Nöten wird.

Barail Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS) lies amidst the tropical forests of the state Assam, India between the coordinates 24o58' – 25o5' North latitudes and 92o46' – 92o52' East longitudes. It covers an area of about 326.24 sq. km. with the altitude ranging from 100 – 1850 m. An ongoing study on the group Marchantiophyta (liverworts, bryophyta) of BWS reveals the presence of 42 species belonging to 24 genera and 14 families. Among these, one genus (Conocephalum Hill) and 13 species are recorded as new for the state of Assam, eight species have been found which are endemic to India, seven species are recorded as rare and one species, Heteroscyphus pandei S.C. Srivast. & Abha Srivast. as threatened within the study area. Out of 24 genera identified, 46% have been found growing purely as terrestrials, 25% as purely epiphytes and 29% have been found to grow both as terrestrials as well as epiphytes. Among these, a diverse and interesting range of microhabitats have also been observed for each taxon. It has been found that genera having vast range of microhabitats comprise large percentage of the total liverwort flora of BWS.

The present phylogenetic analysis was conducted using mitochondrial genome sequences of plants to infer evolutionary relationship of bryophytes. Paraphyly of bryophytes was shown by reconstructed trees. Liverworts are the first to diverge therefore appeared as sister to land plants in nucleotide based trees. However protein sequences based tree show mosses and liverworts to form a joint clade. Hornworts formed sister relationship with vascular plants.

Fontinalis antipyretica var. mollis is recorded for Spain, which differs by orbicular, not keeled leaves. The presence in the same tufts together with var. antiypretica reveals that it is a somatic mutant of the latter. A form of Pellia epiphylla was observed which has wide thallus margins of unistratose cells resembling those of Aneura maxima. A Campylopus was collected resembling C. flexuosus but with ventral stereids in transverse section of the costa. It is described as C. flexuosus var. anomalus. An (unsuccessful) attempt has been made to find the locality in which P. Allorge found Campylopus setifolius for the only time in the Iberian Peninsula. The bryophilous fungus Octosporella jungermanniarum is reported as new to Spain. Dicranodontium didymodon, known before from the Himalaya and western China, is reported as new to Europe.

The availability of organelle genome sequences in public databases facilitates the reconstruction of land plants phylogeny. Therefore the present phylogenetic analysis was conducted using chloroplast genome sequences of plants to study phylogenetic relationship of bryophytes. The representative taxa were selected considering the availability of organelle genome sequences in database. Inferred tree topologies showed paraphyly of bryophytes with sister relationship between hornworts and vascular plants irrespective of the method (Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference) and type of sequences (Nucleotide and Protein) used. Among bryophytes liverworts are the first to diverge therefore appeared as sister to land plants. Moreover land plants formed a monophyletic group.

Allelopathic effect of Stichococcus bacillaris Nageli (Green Alga) on the growth of two bryophytes

Stichococcus bacillaris (Green Alga) growth was observed as a contaminant on two taxa of bryophytes, a thalloid liverwort Lunularia cruciata (L.) Dumort. ex. Lindb. and a hornwort Folioceros physocladus Bharad. ex Schiffn. et Pande, growing on soil in pots in acclimatization chamber of Moss House at National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, India. Due to this algal contamination, suppression of growth of these bryophytes has been observed. It was evident that succession of Stichococcus bacillaris and its interaction with bryophytes played a significant role of allelopathy.

The present contribution is an enumerated account of mosses of Munsyari (Pithoragarh), Western Himalayas. The study revealed the presence 8 orders, 20 families, 32 genera and 44 species in the area. Moss species viz. Anoectangium walkeri Broth., Actinothuidium hookeri (Mitt.) Broth. Stereophyllum ligulatum Jaeg., Anomodon minor (Hedw.) Fŭrnr., Hageniells assamica Dixon, Schoenobryum cocavifolia (Griff.) Gang., Entodon luteonitens Ren. et Card. and Physcomitrium pulchellum (Grif.) Mitt. are reported for the first time from Munsiyari hills as well as western Himalayas as welcome additions to the bryoflora of Uttarakhand (Western Himalaya).

In Europa wurden 30 Arten identifiziert, welche in Nordamerika in einem geschlossenen Bereich vorkommen, in Europa jedoch nur lokal vertreten sind. Eight specimens of bryophytes from Baltic amber are described and illustrated, five mosses and three hepatics. The genus Grimmia as well as Brothera leana are reported for the first time as fossils. The mosses Ctenidium capillifolium, Atrichum groehnii and Hypnodontopsis fossilis as well as the hepatics Cylindrocolea dimorpha and Scapania hoffeinsiana are reported repeatedly. The hepatic Spruceanthus polonicus is recorded the second time and photographs are presented for the first time. In addition, a haplolepideous moss capsule as well as a unknown apparently pleurocarpous moss are illustrated.

Similipal Biosphere Reserve is a part of biotic province of Chhotanagpur Plateau. It has a representative ecosystem under Mahanadian biogeographic region. Its biodiversity is an assemblage representation of Western Ghats and North-East India. Regarding bryophytes this area was rather unexplored and the current investigation shows the occurrence of 33 taxa of bryophytes in this biosphere reserve and its neighboring areas. Each species has been enumerated with its ecological and distributional details.

En 1989, la première compilation de la bryoflore des Vosges et des zone limitrophes paru avec la collaboration de D. Lamy, G. Philippi, V. Rastetter, R. Schumacker et J. Werner (FRAHM 1989). Pour la première fois elle contenait une présentation de la bryoflore d'une partie de la France avec des cartes de distribution en réseau. Cette première vue d´ensemble fut complétée par RASTETTER (1990), WERNER (1990) et FRAHM (1991), traveaux incluant d´autres espèces nouvelles pour les Vosges. 5 ans plus tard FRAHM (1994) ajoutait de nombreuses informations sur la bryoflore et surtout indiquait 16 espèces nouvelles pour la région.

Fährt man mit dem Zug durch das Rheintal zwischen Bonn und Bingen, so ist man von dem schroffen Kerbtal mit seinen Efeu-bewachsenen Schieferfelsen, nackten Felskuppen, niedrigen Eichenwäldern, Weinbergen und nicht zuletzt Burgen fasziniert. Bei genauerem Hinsehen vor Ort erweisen sich diese Habitate jedoch ganz überwiegend bryologisch als langweilig. Es herrscht sauerer Schiefer vor, auf dem Hypnum, Ceratodon und Polytrichum piliferum doninieren; die Wälder sind trocken, Die Felsen von Brombeeren und Schlehen überwachsen und undurchdringlich, nackte Felsen mit Bryum argenteum bestanden. Interessante Orte gibt es nur wenige, die im Folgenden zusammen- und vorgestellt sind.

The present study deals with the investigation of bryophytic flora of Mukteshwar (Uttarakhand). The present account deals with the study of 38 species belonging to 31 genera of 21 families. The mosses are represented by 21 species of 20 genera and 12 families, while Liverworts are represented by 15 species of 10 genera and 8 families. Hornworts consist of 1 genus and 2 species. The dominant families are Aytoniaceae, Marchantiaceae, Thuidiaceae and Pottiaceae. The dominant genera are Plagiochasma, Targionia, Marchantia, Plagiochila, Atrichum, Thuidium and Pogonatum. Macrothamnium stigmatophyllum has been identified as new to western Himalaya, while Thuidium philiberti Limpr. is new to Uttarakhand.

Das Untere Moseltal erstreckt sich von Trier bis zur Mündung in den Rhein bei Koblenz. Es liegt zwischen dem bryologisch gesehen relativ artenarmen quarzitischen Hunsrück im Süden (vgl. Archive for Bryology 69) und der Eifel im Norden und führt überwiegend durch Devonschiefer. Bryologisch interessant wird es durch eine Vielzahl von Xerothermelementen, deren Vorkommen durch die steilen, oft südexponierten Felspartien begünstigt werden. Diese gelten wie die mediterranen Faunenelemente an der Mosel (Würfelnatter, Sattelschrecke, Gottesanbeterin, Smaragdeidechse etc.) als Relikte des postglazialen Wärmeoptimums mit 2-3°C höheren Mitteltemperaturen, die sich an kleinklimatisch begünstigten Stellen haben halten können. Diese Hypothese ist jedoch unbelegt, da Moose sich auch später über Sporen angesiedelt haben können. Genauso brauchen Vorkommen mediterraner Vögel wie die der Zippammer keine Relikte zu sein. Die Frage ließe sich heute nur über die genetsichen Distanzen der DNA Sequenzen moselanischer und mittelmeerischer Populationen klären. Die Frage schließt ein, ob die Vorkommen auf Einzelansiedlungen von Arten zurückgehen, oder ob sich Relikte der mediterraner Moosvegetation in Form von Resten von Moosgesellschaften handelt, da im Boreal ganze Moosgesellschaften und nicht Einzelarten eingewandert sind. Von Hübschmann (1967) arbeitete übereinstimmende Vegetationsaufnahmen aus Südfrankreich in seine Tabellen von der Mosel ein und kam dadurch zum Schluss, dass es sich um identische Gesellschaften handelt.

Since 150 years, the surroundings of Meran in the Etsch valley (Prov. Alto Adige (Südtirol), Italy) are known as an extraordinary place for rare bryophyte species. It is an attraction for bryologists, who collect species, which are found in Europe only in a few places in the southern Alps. The region is especially well known by the fieldwork of Julius Milde, who stayed there 2 years and described some species as new. In spite of the bryological importance of this region, descriptions of this area as well comments on the phytogeographical background seem to lack.

A catalogue of 107 species of liverworts (Marchantiophyta) and 8 species of hornworts (Anthocerotophyta), recorded from Assam, India is presented. This includes three new records for India viz., Cololejeunea denticulata (Horik.) S. Hatt., C. inflata Steph., Plagiochila furcifolia Mitt., and three species viz., Cololejeunea desciscens Steph. Colura ari (Steph.) Steph., Lopholejeunea eulopha (Taylor) Schiffn. new to mainland. Twelve species are new record for Eastern Himalayan bryo-geographical territory, 20 species as new to Assam and seven species are endemic to Indian regions.

Die Rhön ist ein Vulkangebirge in Mitteldeutschland im Länderdreieck von Thüringen, Hessen und Bayern. Sie ist sehr reich an Moosarten, was an seiner Höhe und den damit verbundenen höheren Niederschlägen und der Vielfalt der Standorte und geologischen Untergrundes liegt. Auf diese Weise vereinigen sich hier hochmontane, alpine und subatlantische, basenliebende und säureliebende Arten. Ausdruck dieses Artenreichtums ist die Moosflora der Milseburg (832m) mit schattigen und sonnigen Phonolithfelsen und Blockhalden, auf der allein Geheeb 222 Laubmoosarten fand.

Nachdem Sphagnum tenerum Sull. & Lesq. im 19. Jahrhundert aus Nordamerika beschrieben worden war, wurde die Art von Dismier (1928) sowie Paul (1924, 1931) als Synonym zu C. acutifolium (nemoreum, capillifolium) gestellt. Seitdem wurde das Taxon in Europa kaum mehr unterschieden. so von Daniels & Eddy (1985). Erst Lange (1982), Dierssen (1996), Ludwig et al. (1996), Koperski et al. (2000) sowie Meinunger & Schröder (2007) unterscheiden Sphagnum tenerum in Europa wieder als Art, Nyholm (1955ff) als Varietät. Zudem gibt es noch ein Sphagnum tenerum Warnst., was die Konfusion noch größer macht und eine Klärung verlangt. Warnstorf (1903) führt tenerum und schimperi an. Er schlüsselt S. tenerum aus, behandelt die Art aber nicht im Text (weil sie nicht in der Mark Brandenburg vorkam?) und führt schimperi unter S. acutifolium var. viride an, die als „grau-, gras- oder gelbgrün ohne Beimischung von Rot“ beschrieben wird.

The determination of complete DNA sequence of mitochondrial genome of liverwort, Marchantia polymorpha, opens the way to study the structure and organization of mitochondrial genomes of bryophytes. Since then several studies to sequence mitochondrial genomes of various plant groups have been made. Consequently 71 mitochondrial genomes (as on September 28, 2012) of Viridiplantae are available in organelle genome resources database at National Center for Biotechnology Information. Among these mitochondrial genomes the lineage sampling of bryophytes are poorly represented with only three liverworts, two mosses and two hornworts. The present review deals with features of sequenced mitochondrial genomes of bryophytes.

District Rajouri harbours a rich floral and faunal diversity besides varying climatic zones namely sub-tropical, temperate and alpine. The region exhibit significant altitudinal variations ranging from 490 m. to 4700 m. The present study was conducted to report bryophytic elements of the study area as there is no previous work done on this aspect from the study area, except some stray references. A total of 44 bryophyte species belonging to 4 orders, 16 families and 21 genera were reported from the study area. A checklist of the reported plant species with family, distributional range and habitat is presented in the paper. Besides contributing to the regional and national biodiversity check list database, the present study has opened up a new window for the future studies on the various aspects of the reported taxa including extensive exploration for the updation of the present list and to study the conservational aspects of the disappearing bryoflora of the region.

Leptodontium styriacum shall be distinguished from the closely related L. flexifolium by the frequent occurrence of gemmae, leaves ending in a hyaline cell and larger laminal cells. A critical evaluation of these characters revealed that these differences are obsolete. Therefore both species are synonymised with the result, that L. flexifolium has a disjunct range between the oceanic parts of Europe and the Alps, a distribution pattern also found in several other species.

Since the availability of first complete DNA sequence of chloroplast genome of Marchantia polymorpha several studies to determine the structure and organization of chloroplast genomes of various plant groups have been made. However the lineage sampling of bryophytes are poorly represented in complete chloroplast genome sequences (only three liverworts, two mosses and one hornwort). This review presents features of sequenced chloroplast genomes of bryophytes.

Bryophytes (liverworts, mosses and hornworts) hold the basal most position among extant land plants. The present study deals with comparative analysis of available mitochondrial genomes of bryophytes using bioinformatics tools. These mitochondrial genomes belong to 2 liverworts, 1 moss and 2 hornworts. The analysis is based on multiple genome analysis through whole proteome comparison to detect conservation between mitochondrial genomes of bryophytes.

Eighty-five species of liverworts can be attributed to the atlantic element in Europe. These are grouped into tropical species, macaronesian species and species which reach to a different extend from the Macaronesian Islands to the Iberian Peninsula, Brittany, England and Ireland, Scotland, SW-Norway and the Faeroers as well as species which extend to the mountains of Central Europe, and species disjunct with the Himalayas or the east coast of North America. Since many of these species are called as relict species, the origin of these species is discussed and the arguments for and against relicts/long distance dispersal are enumerated. There are many arguments for a relict status but also for long distance dispersal. It can therefore be concluded that both cases are realized in different species.

Uttarakhand state of India comprises unique topographical conditions and hence is rich in bryophytes. In present work two Tehsils-Munsyari and Dharchula of Pithoragarh have been explored extensively to assess the bryophytic wealth of this district. A preliminary checklist has been prepared which revealed the occurrence of 51 taxa of bryophytes from this district.

Scopelophila cataractae, a species on heavy metal rich substrates, was first recorded for Europe in 1967 from Britain and subsequently recorded from many localities contaminated with heavy metal especially around zinc works. It was found in Germany on schist-walls nearby mines from the nineteenth century. This could indicate that the species was present in Europe already prior to 1967 but overlooked. Records even from solid rock nearby mines suggest a status as native species, however, the species had not been observed in the inrtensively floristically studied region before 1870.

Based on collections of the author in February and March 2012, Notothylas breutelii, Syzigiella perfoliata, Campylopus lamellinervis. as well as the genus Riccia are reported as new to the Dominican Republic. Sixteen new provincial records are given. Updated and revised lists of the mosses of the Dominican republic as well as the province of La Plata are given.

The habitat as well as the unicellular thallus margins of Aneura maxima lead to the assumption that this species could be a hygromorphosis of A. pinguis. Therefore specimens of A. pinguis were cultivated in water. Even after four months the multicellular thallus margins were retained, which proved to be a stable character to separate A. pinguis from A. maxima. Therefore plants even with a small unistratose border, which are attributed to aquatic forms of A. pinguis, may belong to A. maxima. It is supposed that A. maxima was overlooked in Europe but regarded as aquatic forms of A. pinguis named as fo. rivularis. Such plants show unicellular thallus margins and are regarded as hygrophytic form of A. maxima. The presence viz. absence of an unicellular thallus margin seems to be a sufficient character to separate both species. The discussion about the width of the unistratose thallus margin is useless because the type of A. maxima has only 2-4 rows of unicellular cells and not 6-12 or more as attributed by European hepaticologists. This raises doubts whether the European material is identical with A. maxima rather with A. pellioides from Japan.

Moose spielen in Nahrungsketten meist nur eine kleine Rolle und nur wenige Tiergruppen treten bei Moosen als Herbivore auf. Im Winter 2009 konnten Pilzmücken (Mycetophilidae) bei der Aufnahme von Sporenpulver an Buxbaumia aphylla beobachtet werden. Mehrere adulte Individuen saßen an von Schnecken geöffneten Kapseln und nahmen grünes Sporenpulver auf. Während es bekannt ist, dass Schnecken als Konsument an Sporophyten auftreten, ist dies für adulte Pilzmücken neu. Möglicherweise profitieren Moosarten wie Buxbaumia durch diese Herbivorie, da hier auch eine zoochore Ausbreitung von Sporen durch Pilzmücken zu Stande kommen kann.

A preliminary study has been made for Borail Wild Life Sanctuary, Assam, India. A total of 25 species of liverwort (Marchantiophyta) and one species of hornwort (Anthocerotophyta) have been enumerated. Of these, Frullania berthoumieuii is new to India, Caudalejeunea reniloba new to North East India, 13 species new to Assam and 11 species are reported for the first time from Borail WLS. Folioceros paliformis is rediscovered after its type.

Im untersuchten Waldgebiet in der Östlichen Untermainebene konnten aktuelle Vorkommen von 227 Arten und Varietäten von Laub- und Lebermoosen aufgefunden werden. Zygodon conoideus wurde zum ersten Mal für Hessen nachgewiesen, Rhytidiadelphus subpinnatus nach langer Zeit wiederbestätigt. Beachtenswert sind zudem die Nachweise von Amblystegium radicale, Amblystegium subtile, Anomodon longifolius, Aphanorrhegma patens, Cryphaea heteromalla, Dicranum flagellare (c.spg.), Dicranum viride, Dicranum spurium, Distichium capillaceum, Eurhynchium pumilum, Fissidens exiguus, Fissidens gymnandrus, Gymnostomum viridulum, Metzgeria temperata, Mnium lycopodioides, Neckera pennata, Pallavicinia lyellii, Plagiothecium latebricola, Zygodon rupestris und Zygodon viridissimus. Weitere 34 Arten, anhand von Literaturangaben und (wenigen vorhandenen) Herbarbelegen ermittelt, werden aufgeführt. Die Vorkommen der meisten dieser Arten sind im Gebiet wahrscheinlich schon lange erloschen (Bryum torquescens, Bryum uliginosum, Diphyscium foliosum, Fissidens osmundoides, Frullania tamarisci, Ricciocarpos natans, Splachnum ampullaceum, Ulota coarctata u. a.). Der unzureichende Schutz der Erlen- und Eichen-Hainbuchenwälder wird bemängelt.

Es wird ein historischer Abriss der Geschichte der anatomischen Forschung an Moosen gegeben, der Aufbau von Laubmoosstämmchen skizziert und speziell die unterschiedliche Terminologie der Gewebetypen diskutiert. Der weit verbreitete Ausdruck Epidermis kann nicht auf Moose angewandt werden, weil die äußerste Schicht des Stämmchens nicht die Definiton des Begriffes erfüllt, verdickt und längsgestreckt ist. Sie gehört zur äußeren Sklerodermis. Längsgestreckt ist auch das sog. Parenchym oder Mark, das als Zentralgewebe (central tissue) bezeichnet wird. Insgesamt wird eine Gliederung in Hyalodermis, äußere und innere Sklerodermis, Zentralgewebe und Zentralstrang vorgenommen, wobei die englumige Sklerodermis durch weitlumige eine Rinde (Cortex) ersetzt sein kann.

In der letzten Ausgabe der Bryologischen Rundbriefe wurde darauf hingewiesen, dass die Vorkommen von Bartramia stricta im Mosel- und Lahngebiet zu Anacolia laevisphaera gehören (Frahm 2005). Molekularsystematische Untersuchungen hatten klären sollen, ob „Bartramia stricta“ von der Mosel ein Relikt aus dem nacheiszeitlichen Klimaoptimum war oder eine rezente Einwanderung (die Art ist erstmalig 1932 in Deutschland gefunden worden). Dabei wurde Material von der Mosel mit solchem aus dem Mittelmeergebiet verglichen und keinerlei Übereinstimmung gefunden. In einer weiteren Untersuchung, die andere Bartramiaceen einschlossen, kamen die Sequenzen im Stammbaum bei solchen von Anacolia laevisphaera heraus. Anacolia laevisphaera ist aus der amerikanischen Gebirgskette von Bolivien bis bekannt, ferner aus Zentralafrika, von den Kapverdischen Inseln, Seychellen und Oman.

Der Teutoburger Wald ist ein 120 km langer NW-SE streichender niedriger Gebirgszug auf der Grenze zwischen Nordrhein-Westfalen und Niedersachsen. Das südöstlich anschließende Eggegebirge ist hier mit eingeschlossen, da es geologisch die Verlängerung bildet und zu demselben Naturraum gehört. Dieser Naturraum besteht aus einer kompletten Abfolge des Mesozoikums (Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, Keuper, Jura, Kreide), die im Laufe der alpidischen Gebirgsfaltung aufgeschoben worden ist, allerdings dann auch gefaltetet, gestaucht, überschoben und verworfen worden ist.

In succession of terrestrial ecosystem, bryophytes, algae and lichens constitute the primary components. Not only phylogenetically but also physically they are related to each other, as they are also found in close association and intermixed with each other on same substratum. A chlorophycean alga Ulothrix zonata (Weber & Mohr) Kützing has been found growing as an epiphyte on moss Macromitrium sulcatum (Hook.) Brid.. The association is peculiar as the algal filaments form a close net over the surface of moss leaves and axis.

Die Protonemablätter von Tetraphis pellucida werden beschrieben und illustriert. Sie ähneln Farn-Prothallium und werden in Literatur und Moosflora weitgehend ignoriert. Bruträume wurden erstmals an den Rändern von Protonemablätter beobachtet. Die besser bekannte Präsenz von Protonemablätter der Gattung Tetrodontium zeigt, dass diese Charakteristik wesentlich für Tetraphididae ist.

Germinating tests with bryophytes were undertaken with three moss species and two hepatic species. For the first time these tests were performed with aquaceous extracts of bryophytes in contrast to previous studies in which seeds were directly placed on moist bryophytes. First tests showed an inhibition of the germination rate in 3 species but an increase of the germination in one species. A second study revealed that aquaceous as well as alcoholic extracts in high concentrations inhibited the growth of cress, highly diluted extracts promoted the growth. Other authors found either only germination promoting effects or both, promoting and inhibiting effects. Experiments with compounds extracted from bryophytes cited in the literature had only growth inhibiting effects. Brachythecium rutabulum revealed growth inhibiting effects in a previous but growth promoting effects in this study. The conflicting results are hard to explain and should stimulate further more detailed studies. They maybe due to various combinations of different concentrations of bryophyte extracts, different bryophyte species, different pH and different seeds but also contamination by dust, soil, bacteria and fungi .

Der Ursprung alpiner Moosarten in Europa ist nicht genau bekannt. Zur Klärung werden Hypothesen älterer Bryologen wie Herzog oder Gams diskutiert. Die Gruppe der alpinen Arten ist inhomogen und besteht aus wenigen alpinen Endemiten, deren Ursprung im Dunkeln liegt. Da sie sich kaum nach dem Rückgang des Eises innerhalb 10.000 Jahren gebildet haben dürften, könnte es sich um Arten handeln, die noch in anderen Teilen der Welt vorkommen. Die meisten Arten gehören sind arktisch-alpin verbreitet. Für sie werden drei Hypothesen diskutiert. Ein größerer Teil von Arten gehört zu weltweit verbreiteten Oreophyten, die z.B. auch im Himalaya und zum Teil in den tropischen Hochgebirgen vorkommen. Sie können nur durch Fernverbreitung in die Alpen gelangt sein.

Operculum conical to long-rostrate. Peristome single, teeth 16, mostly divided 1/2 or more toward base, vertically striate below, distally papillose to papillose throughout. Calyptra cucullate, smooth, naked, base entire or ciliate. Spores almost smooth to coarsely papillose.

Manche besonders artenreiche Lokalitäten mit seltenen Arten wurden von Bryologen über die Jahrhunderte immer wieder aufgesucht. Die dort gefundenen Arten haben auch Eingang in lokale Florenwerke gefunden. Am Nordrand des Sauerlandes in Nordrhein-Westfalen liegen eine ganze Reihe von solchen hot spots wie der Ramsbecker Wasserfall, die Meilerlegge bei Ostwig, die Velmedahöhle oder die Bruchhauser Steine. Will man sich aber über das Arteninventar eines solcher Gebiete orientieren, vermisst man zumindestens zusammenfassende Artenlisten wenn nicht gar Gebietsmonographien. Da hilft es nur, die Floren durchzusehen und die Arten herauszuziehen, in diesem Fall die Mooflora von Westfalen (Koppe 1935-49. Die Nachträge sind nicht mehr so interessant, da darin nur Kleinarten und unwesentliche Nefunde hinzukommen, die Funde sensationeller Arten aber bereits schon im 19. Jahrhundert gemacht wurden). Dabei reicht es, wenn das einmal gemacht wird und nicht jeder, der solch ein Gebiet besuchen möchte, diese Arbeit von neuem leisten muss. Es gibt sicherlich fähigere Bryologen als den Autor, welche die Gebiete besser kennen, was aber nichts nutzt, wenn dieses Wissen in den Köpfen schlummert und nicht verfügbar ist. Daher sind an dieser Stelle solche Artenlisten für einige solcher Gebiete am Nordrand des Sauerlandes zusammengestellt, die der Autor sich für eine Exkursion im Herbst 2011 erstellt hat. Hier haben wir besondere Voraussetzungen für ein Artenreichtum: das Gebiet bist geologisch sehr divers. Das Grundgebirge besteht aus devonischen Schiefern, das ganze Gebiet wird aber von einem schmalen Kalkriff durchzogen, und zusätzlich gibt es plutonitische Intrusionen von Diabas und Quarzporphyr. Mit Höhen von um 450 m haben wir zudem schon entsprechende Niederschläge und Feuchtigkeit. Daher wurde das Gebiet schon frühzeitig von Bryologen besucht, angefangen von H. Müller Lippstadt über Winter, Grebe, Brockhausen, Mönkemeyer bis zu den Gebrüdern Koppe. In letzter Zeit war die Moosflora der Massenkalkfelsen des nördlichen Sauerlandes Thema der Dissertation von Carsten Schmidt (2004), von dem der erste Teil in Buchform veröffentlicht ist. Das Buch ist aber nach Arten gegliedert, lässt somit auch die hier gewünschten Gebietsbeschreibungen vermissen, die man gerne hätte, wenn man solch eine Lokalität aufsucht.

The Chocó region in Colombia is one of the wettest rainforests regions in the world. Isolated for about 3 million years, it is known for its high rate of endemism in flowering plants, ferns, birds and butterflies. Bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) of this region, however, were very unsufficiently known. For this reason, a first survey of the bryoflora of the Chocó region was made in 1992 along a transect from sea level to 1800 m elevation. Apparently because of the high precipitation with up to 12 m annual rainfall, terrestrial species were found growing on bark or corticolous species on leaves. The cover of epiphytic bryophytes is higher than elsewhere, especially in the lowland forest which shows usually a low bryophyte cover. The percentage of mosses compared with that of liverworts is much lower than elsewhere. Mosses form only about 10% of the bryophyte cover in contrast to 40-50% in the according elevation in other rain forest regions.

Since the existence of Nilgiri hills, bryophyte- the miniatures of plant kingdom play an important and crucial role in the stabilization of Blue Mountains ecology. Unlike Himalayas, the landslides were rare in the area, but with the time and changing global environment it had become a common sight. Significantly ever increasing population and vehicular traffic is the prime reason for them, to cater the need, roads are periodically broadened by cutting road sides destroying the habitat as also the inhabiting species. Bryophytes, are efficient soil binders that regulate the soil moisture and provide substrate for future plant succession. The habitat loss and nudeness of substratum gives impetus to rapid soil erosion that further enhances the problem of their very survival. The present communication provides significance of these avascular cryptogams in environmental assessment, ecological balance and their role in decreasing the pore pressure to check land slides.

Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) are the most basal lineages among extant land plants. However, there is controversy regarding their monophyletic or paraphyletic origin. Moreover, the most basal group of bryophytes also remains questionable. Due to this it is a matter of debate which lineage of bryophytes acts as transition link between bryophytes and pteridophytes. In order to resolve these issues we conducted a bioinformatics analysis on available chloroplast genomes of 1 green alga, 5 bryophytes, 4 pteridophytes, and 6 gymnosperms. Our study is based on multiple genome analysis through whole proteome comparison. The higher number of orthologous identified in Anthoceros (a hornwort), in comparison to other bryophytes considered, against all pteridophytes strongly support hornworts as transition link between bryophytes and pteridophytes.

The development of and the changes in the classification of bryophytes are shown over the last two centuries. It is shown that, except for an early period, the bryophyte system was never totally revised but was always only slightly improved, in which the ideas of a bryophyte system has undergone some kind of evolution but was never drastically changed. Neither the evolution theory in the last century nor the results of cytology, phytochemistry, computerbased studies or genetics in this century had drastically altered the bryophyte system. The reasons for the never totally changed but always slightly improved classification of bryophytes seem to be that recognition of systematic units is based on certain principles such as hierachical classification, types and algorithms of comparison. Therefore it is postulated that no general changes in the classification of bryophytes are to be expected in the future.

Parson’s valley is an area explored for the first time in Indian Bryology; it is situated in Nilgiri hills (Western Ghats). The region is very conducive for the growth of liverworts and it is evident by the present study of recent collections from this area in which 27 taxa (under 12 genera and 5 families) of liverworts have been recorded, of which few are new to Nilgiri hills as well as south India.

During a fieldtrip to Hordaland in Norway, I collected Fissidens serrulatus in one place: Norway, Hordaland, Skanevik, steep slope along road between highway E 134 and village, birch forest, on seeping rocks of a cliff, ca. 90 m alt. leg. Frahm Sept. 1, 2011, no. 2011676. The specimen was collected because of the large size of the plants and to check, whether they belong to F. adianthoides or F. dubius. In fact, F. serrulatus looks much alike these species mentioned, also under the microscope, showing a pale band of cells along the leaf margins, but differs under the microscope by strongly mamillose laminal cells (fig. 3).

Im Untersuchungsgebiet „Rußigmühle“ im Nationalpark „Sächsische Schweiz“ wurden drei freistehende Laubbäume mit Hilfe der Seilklettertechnik auf ihre Epiphytenflora untersucht. Von den insgesamt 44 Epiphyten (24 Flechten und 20 Moose) konnten mit der klassischen Kartiermethode bis 2 Meter Reichhöhe nur 28 Arten (64%) nachgewiesen werden, 16 Arten (36%) fanden sich ausschließlich im höheren Stammbereich und Kronenraum. Eine zeitgleich durchgeführte klassische Kartierung des ca. 0,5 ha großen Untersuchungsgebietes zeigte, dass der Großteil dieser Kronenepiphyten an anderen Gehölzen in Reichhöhe wuchs bzw. auf herabgefallenem Bruchholz nachgewiesen werden konnte. Der Nachweis der Flechten Evernia prunastri und Phaeophyscia orbicularis und des Mooses Ptilidium pulcherrimum im Untersuchungsgebiet gelang ausschließlich durch die Kronenkartierung.

Based on collections by the author made in September 2001, Conocephalum salebrosum, Hydrogonium ehrenbergii, Breutelia chrysocoma and Campylopus pilifer var. brevirameus are reported as new to the Azores. Seven species are reported as new to Sâo Miguel. Various notes and keys are provided for several taxa.

Das Trollbachtal beherbergt eines der bedeutendsten Moosvorkommen im unteren Nahetal. Untersuchungen in den Jahren 1992 bis 2011 ergaben 206 Arten, von denen 71 (34%) zu den Rote-Liste-Arten zählen. Die Artenvielfalt ist das Ergebnis vielfältiger Habitate und Böden. Das Untersuchungsgebiet besteht neben bewirtschafteten Bereichen (Weinbergen) aus einem hohen Anteil an älteren Brachen (ehemalige Weinberge), naturnahe Areale enthalten kleine Quellhorizonte und Bäche, Trockenrasen, besonnte und beschattete Felsabhänge und Felsen. Bemerkenswerte Taxa sind Crossidium squamiferum, Eurhynchium pulchellum, Fissidens exiguus, Mannia fragrans, Phascum vlassovii, Pottia mutica und Tortula papillosissima var. submamillosa. Aufgrund überwiegend xerothemer Standorte dominieren Trockniszeiger mit 110 Spezies, von denen fast ein Drittel (31%) aus submediterranen Arealen stammt. An beschatteten Felshängen überraschen die boreal/dealpinen Arten Leiocolea alpestris und Scapania aequiloba. Eine Gefährdung der Moose besteht vor allem in der Sukzession von Sträuchern und Bäumen in Felstrockenrasen

Das Naturschutzgebiet Haarberg-Höllberg ist mit einer Fläche von 38 ha eines der größten Schutzgebiete der Rheinhessischen Schweiz. Untersuchungen in den Jahren 2008 bis 2011 ergaben auf den saueren und nährstoffarmen Böden einen Besatz mit 133 Moosen, von denen 29 (22%) als Rote-Liste-Arten eingestuft sind. Taxa von besonderer Bedeutung sind Grimmia montana, Phascum curvicolle, Phascum cuspidatum var. papillosum, Rhynchostegium megapolitanum und Tortula crinita. Aus einem Arealtypenspektrum ist zu ersehen, dass neben überwiegend temperaten Arten boreal/subboreale, subozeanische und submediterrane Arten zu etwa gleichen Anteilen vorkommen. Dieses wird durch die Vielfalt der Landschaftsstrukturen erklärt. Mit 8 Arten sind Lebermoose selten, sie finden in den xerothermen Biotopen kaum Lebensmöglichkeiten. Der stärkste Bedrohungsfaktor ist die Sukzession von Sträuchern und Bäumen, besonders die Schlehe (Prunus spinosa) hat bereits größere Flächen der Felstrockenrasen erobert.

Die Moosflora in dem Geschützten Landschaftsbestandteil Scheerwald bei Laubenheim/Nahe setzt sich aus insgesamt 85 Arten zusammen, von denen 21 als Rote-Liste-Arten gelten. Aufgrund der vielseitigen Biotopstrukturen sind feuchtigkeitsliebende, boreal/subboreale Arealtypen mit einem Anteil von 21% etwa gleichstark vertreten wie trockenheitsliebende, submediterrane Arealtypen mit einem Anteil von 20%. Der botanisch wertvollste Bestandteil ist ein Felstrockenrasen auf der Kuppe des beschriebenen Gebietes. In ihm wachsen z.B. Entodon concinnus, Gyroweisia tenuis, Phascum curvicolle, Pleurochaete squarrosa und Rhynchostegiella tenella. Zur Zeit wird das Gebiet regelmäßig durch Mahd gepflegt, eine Gefährdung ist nicht zu erkennen.

Die in Rheinhessen einmaligen kleinen oligozänen Sandsteinfelsen mit umgebenden Trockenrasen bei Eckelsheim sind Standorte einer von submediterranen Moosen geprägten Bryoflora. Charakteristische Taxa sind Phascum cuspidatum var. elatum, Pleurochaete squarrosa und Tortula papillosissima var. submamillosa. Insgesamt wird das Gebiet von 40 Arten besiedelt. Gefährdungsfaktoren sind die Sukzession von Sträuchern und Bäumen und die Wühltätigkeit von Wildtieren.

Beiträge zur Moosflora des Naturschutzgebietes „Ölberg Wöllstein“ (Rheinhessen, Rheinland-Pfalz)

Die Moosflora des markanten Rhyolith-Felsens südwestlich von Wöllstein wurde in den Jahren 1997 bis 2011 untersucht. Es ergab sich ein Gesamt-Bestand von 90 Taxa, von denen 14% in ihrem Bestand gefährdet sind. Aufgrund der starken ökologischen Differenzierung des Gebietes sind boreal/subboreale Arealtypen etwa in gleichem Anteil vertreten wie submediterrane Arealtypen. Bemerkenswert ist die Entdeckung von Desmatodon guepinii durch MEINUNGER & SCHRÖDER (2007), der am Ölberg seinen einzigen Fundort in Deutschland hat. Wie in vielen Gebieten mit Fels-Trockenrasen, besteht auch im Untersuchungsgebiet die Gefahr einer Ausbreitung von Sträuchern und Bäumen und damit die Verdrängung im Bestand gefährdeter Arten.

An account of 40 species of bryophytes including 24 mosses and 16 liverworts of Kakkavayal Reserve forest in the Western Ghats is provided here. This includes four new records of phytogeographical significance to Kerala viz., Cololejeunea appressa (Evans) Benedix, C. follicola Srivastava & Srivastava, C. udarii Asthana & Srivastava and Pallavicinia himalayensis Schiffn.

Stephensoniella brevipedunculata Kash., monotypic Indian liverwort, belonging to Division Marchantiophyta, Class Marchantiopsida, Order Marchantiales and Family Exormothecaceae was initially instituted by Kashyap in 1914, when he collected it for the first time from Mussorrie and later on collected it from other parts of Western Himalayas, such as Kulu and Dulchi pass at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,400m (Kashyap, 1929). Later collections were made from different parts of Western Himalaya by various bryologists like Kanwal (1977), Srivastava (1983), Pant (1983), Pant and Tiwari (1995).Udar et al. (1983) in an attempt to assess reasons for disappearance of this prestigious hepatic undertook studies on its detailed reproductive biology. However, Pant (1983) attributed fast increasing urbanization as the main cause for the disappearance of this liverwort from Nainital area of Western Himalayas. This liverwort was considered to be endemic to Western Himalayas only (IUCN, 2000). Tan et al. 1994a, while compiling first ever red list of bryophytes included 50 species (24 mosses, 25 liverworts and 1 hornwort). Subsequently, the list included another 41 taxa, including S. brevipedunculata, thus increasing the number of most endangered bryophyte species worldwide to 91 (Geissler et al. 1997).

India is among of the 12 mega biodiversity countries in the world. The huge area and the range of phyto-climatic conditions met within its eight bio-geographical zones contribute to the great diversity of the Indian flora. These bio-geographical zones have diverse topographical variations and climatic conditions. The present work deals with the bryo-diversity of western part of the country which is greatly neglected due to its comparatively harsh environmental conditions by the bryologists. It is an attempt to provide a comprehensive account of the bryophyte wealth of the region by stepwise exploration and it has initiated with Ranthambhore National Park.

Anthoceros caucasicus ist eine Art, die zur Hauptsache auf den Makaronesischen Inseln (Madeira, Azoren, Kanaren) vorkommt, daneben selten in Portugal, Spanien, Italien und dem Kaukasus, ferner in Mittelamerika. Frey (in Frey et al. 2006) bezeichnet sie deshalb als tertiäre Reliktart. Eine Verbreitungskarte der westeuropäischen Vorkommen geben During et al. (1996).

The present paper includes information on intraspecific variability (ecological and morpho-anatomical) among 46 accessions of Conocephalum conicum (L.) Dumort. collected from diverse habitats in Bhaderwah (J & K state), India. The study revealed tremendous diversity in almost each studied character.

The aqueous extract of Dumortiera hirsuta (Swaegr.) Nees, a bryophyte, was found to be effective against seven postharvest phytopathogens tested. The fungitoxicity of the extract was measured by percent spore germination inhibition and percent radial growth inhibition using poisoned food technique. The inhibition of spore germination by the Dumortiera extract was within the range of 400 to 550 ppm. In poisoned food technique, out of seven postharvest phytopathogenic fungi tested six were completely inhibited by the Dumortiera extract with concentration range of 550 to 600 ppm. The mode of action of extract (350 ppm) was examined in the case of Aspergillus niger van Tieghem. Distinct morphological changes were observed in treated hyphae in comparison to control . The treatment clearly showed anomalies in the hyphae; cell wall of became flaccid, cytoplasm started leaving the cell wall and became granulated.

Aneura maxima is a species which was described from Java and reported from various parts of Asia (India, Indonesia, New Caledonia and Japan). It was recently found new to Thailand (Frahm et al. 2009). Schuster (1992) reported this species from the Appalachian Mountains in North America and Andriesen et al. (1995) for the first time for Europe from the Belgian Ardennes. I (Frahm 1997) reported the species a second time for Europe from Finland. Subsequently, the species was reported from many other regions of Europe including Denmark (Thingsgaard 2002), Poland and Luxemburg (Werner 2003), Corsica (Ros et al. 2007), France (Sotiaux et al. 1996), Czechia (Kucera 2004) and Germany (Meinunger & Schröder (2007).
