In this article I reanalyze sibilant inventories of Slavic languages by taking into consideration acoustic, perceptive and phonological evidence. The main goal of this study is to show that perception is an important factor which determines the shape of sibilant inventories. The improvement of perceptual contrast essentially contributes to creating new sibilant inventories by (i) changing the place of articulation of the existing phonemes (ii) merging sibilants that are perceptually very close or (iii) deleting them. It has also been shown that the symbol š traditionally used in Slavic linguistics corresponds to two sounds in the IPA systemsystem: it stands for a postalveolar sibilant (ʃ) in some Slavic languages, as e.g. Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak, some Serbian and Croatian dialects, whereas in others like Polish, Russian, Lower Sorbian it functions as a retroflex (s). This discrepancy is motivated by the fact that ʃ is not optimal in terms of maintaining sufficient perceptual contrast to other sibilants such as s and ç. If ʃ occurs together with s and sj there is a considerable perceptual distance between them but if it occurs with ç in an inventory, the distance is much smaller. Therefore, the strategy most languages follow is the change from a postalveolar to a retroflex sibilant.
Abstract: The measured particle ratios in central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-BNL are investigated within a chemical and thermal equilibrium chiral SU(3) Ã É approach. The commonly adopted non-interacting gas calculations yield temperatures close to or above the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition, but without taking into account any interactions. In contrast, the chiral SU(3) model predicts temperature and density dependent effective hadron masses and effective chemical potentials in the medium and a transition to a chirally restored phase at high temperatures or chemical potentials. Three different parametrizations of the model, which show different types of phase transition behaviour, are investigated. We show that if a chiral phase transition occured in those collisions, freezing of the relative hadron abundances in the symmetric phase is excluded by the data. Therefore, either very rapid chemical equilibration must occur in the broken phase, or the measured hadron ratios are the outcome of the dynamical symmetry breaking. Furthermore, the extracted chemical freeze-out parameters differ considerably from those obtained in simple non-interacting gas calculations. In particular, the three models yield up to 35 MeV lower temperatures than the free gas approximation. The inmedium masses turn out to differ up to 150 MeV from their vacuum values.
Membrane-bound complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) of the respiratory chain is considered the main site of mitochondrial radical formation and plays a major role in many mitochondrial pathologies. Structural information is scarce for complex I, and its molecular mechanism is not known. Recently, the 49-kDa subunit has been identified as part of the "catalytic core" conferring ubiquinone reduction by complex I. We found that the position of the 49-kDa subunit is clearly separated from the membrane part of complex I, suggesting an indirect mechanism of proton translocation. This contradicts all hypothetical mechanisms discussed in the field that link proton translocation directly to redox events and suggests an indirect mechanism of proton pumping by redox-driven conformational energy transfer.

The flower structure of Pollia crispata (R.Br.) Benth. allows access by a taxonomically diverse assemblage of pollinating insects. Patterns of flower anthesis, and removal of pollen, suggest adaptation to diurnal flower visitors. Flowers are pollinated by insects, but Pollia crispata can produce viable seeds independent of insect pollination, and plants can reproduce and spread vegetatively subsequent to founding events. The composition of the pollinator fauna is dominated by syrphid flies, halictid bees and the apid bee Trigona carbonaria, but most insect visitors observed have broader recorded flower host ranges. In general, the insects recorded from Pollia crispata flowers are restricted to the understorey and ground strata of regional subtropical rainforests.
How far can language-specific structures influence conceptualisation? After a period of time where the discussion of any ‘Whorfian’ effects tended to be considered of little scientific merit, the recent decade has seen a renewed interest in this question. In particular, studies have aimed to tease apart ‘thinking for speaking’ from general cognition (cf. Slobin 1996, Stutterheim & Nüse 2002) and have shown that language-specific differences can often be observed in verbalisation as well as in the preverbal preparation phase of speech production, rather than in non-linguistic tasks.
Floristic composition and environmental relationships of Sphagnum-dominated communities in Victoria
(2003)
Floristic community types and their environmental correlates are described for Sphagnum-dominated communities throughout Victoria. Current threats to the condition of these communities are outlined, with an assessment of their conservation status. Sites from lowland (350 m) to alpine (1780 m) areas were surveyed and seven floristic groups were recognised using cluster analysis and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling techniques. The strongest floristic gradients corresponded to altitude, temperature, rainfall, geology and current condition. Several of the sites surveyed were degraded, with some sites heavily impacted by cattle grazing or invaded by weeds. While some floristic groups, particularly sub-alpine bogs, are reserved in national parks, others such as montane and lowland bogs occur on forestry and private land tenures. Reservation has not protected some sites from threatening processes, most notably in alpine national parks, where cattle grazing has seriously degraded many of these Sphagnum peatland communities to either disclimax communities or isolated moss beds no longer functioning ecologically as peatlands. Further surveys of Sphagnum-dominated communities elsewhere in Victoria are warranted, especially montane and lowland areas. The results suggest Sphagnum-dominated communities will require conservation planning and management action throughout their geographic range in Victoria.
The vegetation of Peery Lake area, Paroo-Darling National Park (32°18’–32°40’S, 142°10’–142°25’E) in north western New South Wales was assessed using intensive quadrat sampling and mapped using extensive ground truthing and interpretation of aerial photograph and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite images. 378 species of vascular plants were recorded from this survey from 66 families. Species recorded from previous studies but not noted in the present study have been added to give a total of 424 vascular plant species for the Park including 55 (13%) exotic species. Twenty vegetation communities were identified and mapped, the most widespread being Acacia aneura tall shrubland/tall open-shrubland, Eremophila/Dodonaea/Acacia open shrubland and Maireana pyramidata low open shrubland. One hundred and fifty years of pastoral use has impacted on many of these communities.
