In this article I reanalyze sibilant inventories of Slavic languages by taking into consideration acoustic, perceptive and phonological evidence. The main goal of this study is to show that perception is an important factor which determines the shape of sibilant inventories. The improvement of perceptual contrast essentially contributes to creating new sibilant inventories by (i) changing the place of articulation of the existing phonemes (ii) merging sibilants that are perceptually very close or (iii) deleting them. It has also been shown that the symbol š traditionally used in Slavic linguistics corresponds to two sounds in the IPA systemsystem: it stands for a postalveolar sibilant (ʃ) in some Slavic languages, as e.g. Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak, some Serbian and Croatian dialects, whereas in others like Polish, Russian, Lower Sorbian it functions as a retroflex (s). This discrepancy is motivated by the fact that ʃ is not optimal in terms of maintaining sufficient perceptual contrast to other sibilants such as s and ç. If ʃ occurs together with s and sj there is a considerable perceptual distance between them but if it occurs with ç in an inventory, the distance is much smaller. Therefore, the strategy most languages follow is the change from a postalveolar to a retroflex sibilant.
Abstract: The measured particle ratios in central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC-BNL are investigated within a chemical and thermal equilibrium chiral SU(3) Ã É approach. The commonly adopted non-interacting gas calculations yield temperatures close to or above the critical temperature for the chiral phase transition, but without taking into account any interactions. In contrast, the chiral SU(3) model predicts temperature and density dependent effective hadron masses and effective chemical potentials in the medium and a transition to a chirally restored phase at high temperatures or chemical potentials. Three different parametrizations of the model, which show different types of phase transition behaviour, are investigated. We show that if a chiral phase transition occured in those collisions, freezing of the relative hadron abundances in the symmetric phase is excluded by the data. Therefore, either very rapid chemical equilibration must occur in the broken phase, or the measured hadron ratios are the outcome of the dynamical symmetry breaking. Furthermore, the extracted chemical freeze-out parameters differ considerably from those obtained in simple non-interacting gas calculations. In particular, the three models yield up to 35 MeV lower temperatures than the free gas approximation. The inmedium masses turn out to differ up to 150 MeV from their vacuum values.
Membrane-bound complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) of the respiratory chain is considered the main site of mitochondrial radical formation and plays a major role in many mitochondrial pathologies. Structural information is scarce for complex I, and its molecular mechanism is not known. Recently, the 49-kDa subunit has been identified as part of the "catalytic core" conferring ubiquinone reduction by complex I. We found that the position of the 49-kDa subunit is clearly separated from the membrane part of complex I, suggesting an indirect mechanism of proton translocation. This contradicts all hypothetical mechanisms discussed in the field that link proton translocation directly to redox events and suggests an indirect mechanism of proton pumping by redox-driven conformational energy transfer.

The flower structure of Pollia crispata (R.Br.) Benth. allows access by a taxonomically diverse assemblage of pollinating insects. Patterns of flower anthesis, and removal of pollen, suggest adaptation to diurnal flower visitors. Flowers are pollinated by insects, but Pollia crispata can produce viable seeds independent of insect pollination, and plants can reproduce and spread vegetatively subsequent to founding events. The composition of the pollinator fauna is dominated by syrphid flies, halictid bees and the apid bee Trigona carbonaria, but most insect visitors observed have broader recorded flower host ranges. In general, the insects recorded from Pollia crispata flowers are restricted to the understorey and ground strata of regional subtropical rainforests.
How far can language-specific structures influence conceptualisation? After a period of time where the discussion of any ‘Whorfian’ effects tended to be considered of little scientific merit, the recent decade has seen a renewed interest in this question. In particular, studies have aimed to tease apart ‘thinking for speaking’ from general cognition (cf. Slobin 1996, Stutterheim & Nüse 2002) and have shown that language-specific differences can often be observed in verbalisation as well as in the preverbal preparation phase of speech production, rather than in non-linguistic tasks.
Floristic composition and environmental relationships of Sphagnum-dominated communities in Victoria
(2003)
Floristic community types and their environmental correlates are described for Sphagnum-dominated communities throughout Victoria. Current threats to the condition of these communities are outlined, with an assessment of their conservation status. Sites from lowland (350 m) to alpine (1780 m) areas were surveyed and seven floristic groups were recognised using cluster analysis and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling techniques. The strongest floristic gradients corresponded to altitude, temperature, rainfall, geology and current condition. Several of the sites surveyed were degraded, with some sites heavily impacted by cattle grazing or invaded by weeds. While some floristic groups, particularly sub-alpine bogs, are reserved in national parks, others such as montane and lowland bogs occur on forestry and private land tenures. Reservation has not protected some sites from threatening processes, most notably in alpine national parks, where cattle grazing has seriously degraded many of these Sphagnum peatland communities to either disclimax communities or isolated moss beds no longer functioning ecologically as peatlands. Further surveys of Sphagnum-dominated communities elsewhere in Victoria are warranted, especially montane and lowland areas. The results suggest Sphagnum-dominated communities will require conservation planning and management action throughout their geographic range in Victoria.
The vegetation of Peery Lake area, Paroo-Darling National Park (32°18’–32°40’S, 142°10’–142°25’E) in north western New South Wales was assessed using intensive quadrat sampling and mapped using extensive ground truthing and interpretation of aerial photograph and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite images. 378 species of vascular plants were recorded from this survey from 66 families. Species recorded from previous studies but not noted in the present study have been added to give a total of 424 vascular plant species for the Park including 55 (13%) exotic species. Twenty vegetation communities were identified and mapped, the most widespread being Acacia aneura tall shrubland/tall open-shrubland, Eremophila/Dodonaea/Acacia open shrubland and Maireana pyramidata low open shrubland. One hundred and fifty years of pastoral use has impacted on many of these communities.

The climate system can be regarded as a dynamic nonlinear system. Thus, traditional linear statistical methods fail to model the nonlinearities of such a system. These nonlinearities render it necessary to find alternative statistical techniques. Since artificial neural network models (NNM) represent such a nonlinear statistical method their use in analyzing the climate system has been studied for a couple of years now. Most authors use the standard Backpropagation Network (BPN) for their investigations, although this specific model architecture carries a certain risk of over-/underfitting. Here we use the so called Cauchy Machine (CM) with an implemented Fast Simulated Annealing schedule (FSA) (Szu, 1986) for the purpose of attributing and detecting anthropogenic climate change instead. Under certain conditions the CM-FSA guarantees to find the global minimum of a yet undefined cost function (Geman and Geman, 1986). In addition to potential anthropogenic influences on climate (greenhouse gases (GHG), sulphur dioxide (SO2)) natural influences on near surface air temperature (variations of solar activity, explosive volcanism and the El Nino = Southern Oscillation phenomenon) serve as model inputs. The simulations are carried out on different spatial scales: global and area weighted averages. In addition, a multiple linear regression analysis serves as a linear reference. It is shown that the adaptive nonlinear CM-FSA algorithm captures the dynamics of the climate system to a great extent. However, free parameters of this specific network architecture have to be optimized subjectively. The quality of the simulations obtained by the CM-FSA algorithm exceeds the results of a multiple linear regression model; the simulation quality on the global scale amounts up to 81% explained variance. Furthermore the combined anthropogenic effect corresponds to the observed increase in temperature Jones et al. (1994), updated by Jones (1999a), for the examined period 1856–1998 on all investigated scales. In accordance to recent findings of physical climate models, the CM-FSA succeeds with the detection of anthropogenic induced climate change on a high significance level. Thus, the CMFSA algorithm can be regarded as a suitable nonlinear statistical tool for modeling and diagnosing the climate system.
HALLER, J.G. ZlNN und J.A. MURRAY im 18. Jahrhundert. G.F.W.
A new species, Cephaloziella biokoensis Vá a & F.Müller, is described and illustrated. The type locality is at the highest point of the island of Bioko (Equatorial Guinea) at an altitude of ca. 2900 m NN. The new species belongs to subgenus Prionolobus (Spruce) Müll.Frib. and is closely related to C. turneri (Hook.) Müll.Frib. The main differences between these two species are shown in a table.
A micro-crustacean has recently been discovered in Vendée. It is an Ostracod living in temporary bodies of slightly brackish or fresh water. From the Cyprididae family, Cypris bispinosa is a crustacean whose presence in France is only known from eight countess. It is however one of our largest ostracods, and the lateral spine fixed on each side of its carapace make the species easily recognisable with a lens.
In 1869 Tacite Letourneux described a new species of gasteropod, Valvata bourguignati, in a spring in south-east Vendée. The name of this new species was later considered to be synonymous with Neohoratia globulina. Recent samplings in the Locus typicus have permitted the revision of this taxon, now named Islamia moquiniana.
On the intertidal zone of Le Veillon at Talmond-Saint-Hilaire (Vendée, France), in 1963 Gilbert Bessonnat discovered traces of vertebrate footprints in a Hettangian formation. On March 28th & 29th, at this site a study session was held on the theme: "sites with vertebrate footprints on the Triassic-Jurassic limit". Palæontologists, palæobotanists, sedimentologists, hydrologists, scientific historians and naturalists compared their results and projected further research. This exceptional Vendée heritage site is to be protected and developed.
It has been forty years since the Jurassic site of Veillon in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire (Vendée, France), where footprints of vertebrates were found, was plundered. This outstanding site belonging to Vendée's geological patrimony needs to be preserved and developed. Some footprints from Veillon are displayed in the collections of about thirty public institutions and six museums.

The volume changes of cesium under pressure are discussed with respect to the packing density of the atoms and valence. The element is univalent in densely packed Cs I and Cs II. Valence increases in Cs III (packing density q = 0.973), in Cs IV (q = 0.943), in Cs V (q ~ 0.99), and in close packed Cs VI. The diminuition of volume beyond ~ 15 GPa is caused by this increase only which implies that electrons of the fifth shell act as valence electrons.
The earliest known extensive texts in Gullah (and perhaps African American Vernacular English as well) to appear in print were published in The Riverside Magazine for Young People in November, 1868, under the title "Negro Fables" (p. 505-507). These are four animal stories, which the editor of the magazine, Horace Elisha Scudder, described in his column only as having been "taken down from the lips of an old negro, in the vicinity of Charleston" (see Appendix for the editor´s comments and the full text of the stories).2 The Story-Teller was evidently a genuine "man of words" (Abrahams, 1983), a true raconteur who could artistically embellish a simple traditional account (perhaps further embellished by the transcriber) in a variety of ways. That he commanded a certain range of Gullah is evident from particular signature features in the texts, but the absence of other typical Gullah features and the presence of shared Gullah/African American Vernacular English usages, together with the periodic appearance of standard English forms, demonstrate that these texts provide perhaps the earliest actual documentation (apart from early tertiary comments, cited e.g. in Feagin, 1997, p. 128-129) of register variation or style/code-switching among Gullah speakers. ...
Twenty-two vascular plant communities occurring on, and adjacent to the Cumberland Plain and Hornsby Plateau, are defined using a multi-variate analysis of quantitative field survey data. Communities are described using structural features, habitat characteristics and diagnostic species. Diagnostic species are identified using a statistical fidelity measure. The pre–European spatial distribution of communities is estimated using a decision tree approach to derive relationships between community distribution and geological, climatic and topographical variables. Contemporary vegetation cover is estimated from 1:16 000 scale aerial photography (1997/98) and sorted into six categories based on cover of Eucalyptus species. These categories are only approximately related to vegetation condition: high Eucalyptus cover classes are most likely to contain high levels of floristic diversity, but areas with scattered cover or no cover at all may have either high or low diversity.
Map accuracy is assessed using independent field samples and is primarily limited by the accuracy of 1:100 000 geological maps. Patterns in overstorey composition were mapped at 1:16 000 scale but were less useful in delineating community boundaries than was hoped because few species are confined to a single community. The extent to which observer bias may influence estimates of the present extent of remnant vegetation is investigated by comparing the interpretations of two observers for a subset of the study area.
The community classification is interpreted in light of previous publications and the Endangered Ecological Communities listed under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation (TSC) Act (1995). Four communities listed under the TSC Act (1995) are represented by more than one unit in the new classification: Cumberland Plains Woodland (represented by Shale Plains Woodland, Shale Hills Woodland); Sydney Coastal River Flat Forest (Riparian Woodland, Riparian Forest, Alluvial Woodland); Shale/Sandstone Transition Forest (Shale/Sandstone Transition Forest low sandstone influence, high sandstone influence); and Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest (Turpentine-Ironbark Forest, Turpentine-Ironbark Margin Forest). A further seven listed communities are described in this paper (Cooks River/Castlereagh Ironbark Forest, Shale/ Gravel Transition Forest, Castlereagh Swamp Woodland, Agnes Banks Woodland, Western Sydney Dry Rainforest, Moist Shale Woodland, and Blue Gum High Forest).
As a result of clearing, native vegetation cover on the Cumberland Plain has been reduced to only 13.1% (+ 1.7) of the pre- European extent. Despite high levels of fragmentation, the presence of exotic species and a history of extensive grazing, high numbers of native species were recorded in remnants of all sizes. A large proportion of species was recorded once only (22%), while nearly half of all species were recorded 5 times or less. This suggests that there is a high likelihood that further clearing will lead to a loss of floristic diversity. Two exotic species (Olea europea subsp. africana and Myrsiphyllum asparagoides) are identified as a major threat to the conservation of native flora due to their widespread distribution and ability to out-compete native species. Control of these species should be a high priority in conservation management.
