Coercion or privatization? Crisis and planned economies in the debates of the early Frankfurt School
(2023)
The 1930s–1940s underwent profound structural economic and political turmoil following the collapse of the nineteenth century liberal market economies. The intellectual debates of the time were dominated by the question of whether Marx’s theory of the tendency of rate of profit to fall was true, or what consequence could be imagined in the survival of capitalist societies. Placed in the middle of such debates was also the reorganization of national productions into war economies. By means of reconstructive analysis, the paper provides a critical overview of the debates that took place within the circle of the Frankfurt School during those years. It also advances an interpretive thesis suggesting that remedies to capitalist crises of the time turned state powers into privatized, illiberal coercive entities. Coercion and privatization reinforced each other. This general tendency is well illustrated by the famous Pollock-Neumann debate. These intellectuals expressed views not only intended to shed light on the historical period of time, but also to formulate long-term considerations on the authoritarian trends embedded in our contemporary democracies. Through historical reconstruction, the paper’s aim is to identify a long-term structural thread of transformation starting from the transformation of the German economy in 1930s and touching upon post Second World War problems of states’ restructuring along privatization/coercion divides.
Background: Multiple studies have focused on medical and pharmacological treatments and outcome predictors of patients with status epilepticus (SE). However, a sufficient understanding of recurrent episodes of SE is lacking. Therefore, we reviewed recurrent SE episodes to investigate their clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients with relapses.
Methods: In this retrospective, multicenter study, we reviewed recurrent SE patient data covering 2011 to 2017 from the university hospitals of Frankfurt and Marburg, Germany. Clinical characteristics and outcome variables were compared among the first and subsequent SE episodes using a standardized form for data collection.
Results: We identified 120 recurrent SE episodes in 80 patients (10.2% of all 1177 episodes). The mean age at the first SE episode was 62.2 years (median 66.5; SD 19.3; range 21–91), and 42 of these patients were male (52.5%). A mean of 262.4 days passed between the first and the second episode. Tonic–clonic seizure semiology and a cerebrovascular disease etiology were predominant in initial and recurrent episodes. After subsequent episodes, patients showed increased disability as indicated by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and 9 out of 80 patients died during the second episode (11.3%). Increases in refractory and super-refractory SE (RSE and SRSE, respectively) were noted during the second episode, and the occurrence of a non-refractory SE (NRSE) during the first SE episode did not necessarily provide a protective marker for subsequent non-refractory episodes. An increase in the use of intravenous-available anti-seizure medication (ASM) was observed in the treatment of SE patients. Patients were discharged from hospital with a mean of 2.8 ± 1.0 ASMs after the second SE episode and 2.1 ± 1.2 ASMs after the first episode. Levetiracetam was the most common ASM used before admission and on discharge for SE patients.
Conclusions: This retrospective, multicenter study used the mRS to demonstrate worsened outcomes of patients at consecutive SE episodes. ASM accumulations after subsequent SE episodes were registered over the study period. The study results underline the necessity for improved clinical follow-ups and outpatient care to reduce the health care burden from recurrent SE episodes.
Background: Patients with epilepsy often require a specialized treatment, which may differ because of the responsibility of the federal states for healthcare policy in Germany.
Objective: State-specific differences in healthcare structures based on inpatient hospital cases of epilepsy patients between 2000 and 2020 in relation to specialized treatment offers.
Material and methods: The inpatient hospital cases of the German federal states were evaluated using the Friedman test and time series trend analysis. A state-specific inpatient undertreatment or overtreatment of inpatient hospital cases outside the registered state was analyzed by comparing residence-related and treatment site-related case numbers with a threshold of ±5%.
Results: After age adjustment, significantly more inpatient cases were found in the “new states” compared to the “old states” (p < 0.001); the highest number of cases nationwide was found in Saarland with 224.8 ± 11.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The trend analysis showed an increase in cases until the end of 2016 with a trend reversal from 2017 and a further significant decrease in hospital cases in the COVID year 2020. A relative inpatient undertreatment was shown for Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia. Additional, possibly compensatory, inpatient care was found for all city states (Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin) and Baden-Wuerttemberg. In federal states with a relative inpatient undertreatment and/or high inpatient hospital case numbers, there was often a lower availability of specialized epilepsy centers, specialized outpatient clinics and epilepsy outpatient clinics.
Conclusion: In Germany there are state-specific differences in the structure of care, with higher inpatient hospital care in the “new states” and Saarland. In addition, there were federal states with disproportionately higher treatment of patients not registered in this federal state. A potential influencing factor may be the availability of centers with specialized treatment for epilepsy patients.
A considerable effort has been dedicated recently to the construction of generic equations of state (EOSs) for matter in neutron stars. The advantage of these approaches is that they can provide model-independent information on the interior structure and global properties of neutron stars. Making use of more than 106 generic EOSs, we asses the validity of quasi-universal relations of neutron star properties for a broad range of rotation rates, from slow-rotation up to the mass-shedding limit. In this way, we are able to determine with unprecedented accuracy the quasi-universal maximum-mass ratio between rotating and nonrotating stars and reveal the existence of a new relation for the surface oblateness, i.e., the ratio between the polar and equatorial proper radii. We discuss the impact that our findings have on the imminent detection of new binary neutron-star mergers and how they can be used to set new and more stringent limits on the maximum mass of nonrotating neutron stars, as well as to improve the modelling of the X-ray emission from the surface of rotating stars.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a higher incidence of depression and a worsening of psychiatric conditions, while pre-existing constraints of the healthcare system and safety regulations limited psychiatric care.
Aims: We investigated the impact of the pandemic on the clinical care of patients with a single episode (SE-MDD) or major depressive disorder (MDD) in Germany.
Methods: Nationwide inpatient data were extracted from the German Institute for Hospital Remuneration System for 2020 and 2021 (depression data) and the Robert Koch Institute (COVID-19 incidence). Changes in inpatients were tested with linear regression models. Local cases of depression in our department compared to 2019 were explored with one-way ANOVA and Dunnett's test.
Results: Across Germany, the inpatient numbers with both SE-MDD and MDD declined by more than 50% during three out of four COVID-19 waves. Higher COVID-19 incidence correlated with decreased inpatient numbers. In our department, fewer MDD inpatients were treated in 2020 (adj. p < 0.001) and 2021 (adj. p < 0.001) compared to 2019, while the number of SE-MDD inpatients remained stable. During this period fewer elective and more emergency inpatients were admitted. In parallel, MDD outpatient admissions increased in 2021 compared to 2019 (adj. p = 0.002) and 2020 (adj. p = 0.003).
Conclusion: During high COVID-19 infection rates, MDD patients received less inpatient care, which might cause poor outcomes in the near future. These data highlight the necessity for improved infrastructure in the in- and outpatient domains to facilitate accessibility to adequate care.
Analysis of machine learning prediction quality for automated subgroups within the MIMIC III dataset
(2023)
The motivation for this master’s thesis is to explore the potential of predictive data analytics in the field of medicine. For this, the MIMIC-III dataset offers an extensive foundation for the construction of prediction models, including Random Forest, XGBOOST, and deep learning networks. These models were implemented to forecast the mortality of 2,655 stroke patients.
The first part of the thesis involved conducting a comprehensive data analysis of the filtered MIMIC-III dataset.
Subsequently, the effectiveness and fairness of the predictive models were evaluated. Although the performance levels of the developed models did not match those reported in related research, their potential became evident. The results obtained demonstrated promising capabilities and highlighted the effectiveness of the applied methodologies. Moreover, the feature relevance within the XGBOOST model was examined to increase model explainability.
Finally, relevant subgroups were identified to perform a comparative analysis of the prediction performance across these subgroups. While this approach can be regarded as a valuable methodology, it was not possible to investigate underlying reasons for potential unfairness across clusters. Inside the test data, not enough instances remained per subgroup for further fairness or feature relevance analysis.
In conclusion, the implementation of an alternative use case with a higher patient count is recommended.
The code for this analysis is made available via a GitHub repository and includes a frontend to visualize the results.
In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade Project (LIU), the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) went through major upgrades resulting in new effects to study, challenges to overcome and new parameter regimes to explore. To assess the achievable beam brightness limit of the machine, a series of experimental and computational studies in the transverse planes were performed. In particular, the new injection scheme induces optics perturbations that are strongly enhanced near the half-integer resonance. In this thesis, methods for dynamically measuring and correcting these perturbations and their impact on the beam performance will be presented. Additionally, the quality of the transverse beam distributions and strategies for improvement will be addressed. Finally, the space charge effects when dynamically crossing the half-integer resonance will be characterized. The results of these studies and their broader significance beyond the PSB will be discussed.
In this paper, we use the “gender as a social structure” framework to assess macro-, interactional-, and micro-level mechanisms explaining the stalled revolution in gender ideologies. Using the European Values Study 2008 data and latent class analysis, we look at the spread of gender ideologies and examine their association with national levels of gendered ascription of work and care roles, work–family compatibility, social inequality and societal affluence, individual characteristics, and cross-level interactions with gender and education in 36 (post-)industrialized countries. By including a large number of Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern European countries, we provide a new and comprehensive picture of the gender ideology landscapes of Europe, reflected in two unidimensional classes—egalitarian and traditional—and four multidimensional classes, covering more than 60 percent of respondents—family oriented, choice egalitarian, intensive motherhood, and neotraditional. By modeling key features of macro-level variation, we show how the spread of gender ideologies is associated with distinct contextual conditions. We consolidate previous findings on multidimensional gender ideologies, which were based on fewer countries.
RuO₂: a puzzle to be solved
(2023)
Altermagnetism is a topic that has lately been gaining attention and the RuO2 compound is among one of the most studied altermagnetic candidates. However, the survey of available literature on RuO2 properties suggests that there is no consensus about the magnetism of this material. By performing density functional theory calculations, we show that the electronic properties of stoichiometric RuO2 are described in terms of a smaller Hubbard U within DFT+U than the value required to have magnetism. We further argue that Ru vacancies can actually aid the formation of a magnetic state in RuO2. This in turn suggests that a characterization of the amount of Ru vacancies in experimental samples might help the resolution of the controversy between the different experimental results.
Topological semimetal antiferromagnets provide a rich source of exotic topological states which can be controlled by manipulating the orientation of the Néel vector, or by modulating the lattice parameters through strain. We investigate via ab initio density functional theory calculations, the effects of shear strain on the bulk and surface states n two antiferromagnetic EuCd2As2 phases with out-of-plane and in-plane spin configurations. When magnetic moments are along the c-axis, a 3% longitudinal or diagonal shear strain can tune the Dirac semimetal phase to an axion insulator phase, characterized by the parity-based invariant η4I=2. For an in-plane magnetic order, the axion insulator phase remains robust under all shear strains. We further find that for both magnetic orders, the bulk gap increases and a surface gap opens on the (001) surface up to 16 meV. Because of a nonzero η4I index and gapped states on the (001) surface, hinge modes are expected to happen on the side surface states between those gapped surface states. This result can provide a valuable insight in the realization of the long-sought axion states.
Adhesion of human pathogenic bacteria to endothelial cells is facilitated by fibronectin interaction
(2023)
Human pathogenic bacteria circulating in the bloodstream need to find a way to interact with endothelial cells (ECs) lining the blood vessels to infect and colonise the host. The extracellular matrix (ECM) of ECs might represent an attractive initial target for bacterial interaction, as many bacterial adhesins have reported affinities to ECM proteins, in particular to fibronectin (Fn). Here, we analysed the general role of EC-expressed Fn for bacterial adhesion. For this, we evaluated the expression levels of ECM coding genes in different ECs, revealing that Fn is the highest expressed gene and thereby, it is highly abundant in the ECM environment of ECs. The role of Fn as a mediator in bacterial cell-host adhesion was evaluated in adhesion assays of Acinetobacter baumannii, Bartonella henselae, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Staphylococcus aureus to ECs. The assays demonstrated that bacteria colocalised with Fn fibres, as observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Fn removal from the ECM environment (FN1 knockout ECs) diminished bacterial adherence to ECs in both static and dynamic adhesion assays to varying extents, as evaluated via absolute quantification using qPCR. Interactions between adhesins and Fn might represent the crucial step for the adhesion of human-pathogenic Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria targeting the ECs as a niche of infection.

Abstract
Psychiatric disorders associated with psychological trauma, stress and anxiety are a highly prevalent and increasing cause of morbidity worldwide. Current therapeutic approaches, including medication, are effective in alleviating symptoms of anxiety disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), at least in some individuals, but have unwanted side-effects and do not resolve underlying pathophysiology. After a period of stagnation, there is renewed enthusiasm from public, academic and commercial parties in designing and developing drug treatments for these disorders. Here, we aim to provide a snapshot of the current state of this field that is written for neuropharmacologists, but also practicing clinicians and the interested lay-reader. After introducing currently available drug treatments, we summarize recent/ongoing clinical assessment of novel medicines for anxiety and PTSD, grouped according to primary neurochemical targets and their potential to produce acute and/or enduring therapeutic effects. The evaluation of putative treatments targeting monoamine (including psychedelics), GABA, glutamate, cannabinoid, cholinergic and neuropeptide systems, amongst others, are discussed. We emphasize the importance of designing and clinically assessing new medications based on a firm understanding of the underlying neurobiology stemming from the rapid advances being made in neuroscience. This includes harnessing neuroplasticity to bring about lasting beneficial changes in the brain rather than – as many current medications do – produce a transient attenuation of symptoms, as exemplified by combining psychotropic/cognitive enhancing drugs with psychotherapeutic approaches. We conclude by noting some of the other emerging trends in this promising new phase of drug development.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) orchestrate various biological processes and regulate the development of cardiovascular diseases. Their potential therapeutic benefit to tackle disease progression has recently been extensively explored. Our study investigates the role of lncRNA Nudix Hydrolase 6 (NUDT6) and its antisense target fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) in two vascular pathologies: abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and carotid artery disease. Using tissue samples from both diseases, we detected a substantial increase of NUDT6, whereas FGF2 was downregulated. Targeting Nudt6 in vivo with antisense oligonucleotides in three murine and one porcine animal model of carotid artery disease and AAA limited disease progression. Restoration of FGF2 upon Nudt6 knockdown improved vessel wall morphology and fibrous cap stability. Overexpression of NUDT6 in vitro impaired smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration, while limiting their proliferation and augmenting apoptosis. By employing RNA pulldown followed by mass spectrometry as well as RNA immunoprecipitation, we identified Cysteine and Glycine Rich Protein 1 (CSRP1) as another direct NUDT6 interaction partner, regulating cell motility and SMC differentiation. Overall, the present study identifies NUDT6 as a well-conserved antisense transcript of FGF2. NUDT6 silencing triggers SMC survival and migration and could serve as a novel RNA-based therapeutic strategy in vascular diseases.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a pathological widening of the aortic wall characterized by loss of smooth muscle cells (SMCs), extracellular matrix degradation, and local inflammation. This condition is often asymptomatic until rupture occurs, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates. Diagnosis is mostly accidental and the only currently available treatment option remains surgical intervention. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a novel class of regulatory non-coding RNAs that originate from backsplicing. Their highly stable loop structure, combined with a remarkable enrichment in body fluids, make circRNAs promising disease biomarkers. We investigated the contribution of circRNAs to AAA pathogenesis and their potential application to improve AAA diagnostics. Gene expression analysis revealed the presence of deregulated circular transcripts stemming from AAA-relevant gene loci. Among these, the circRNA to the Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated gene (cATM) was upregulated in human AAA specimens, in AAA-derived SMCs, and serum samples collected from aneurysm patients. In primary aortic SMCs, cATM increased upon angiotensin II and doxorubicin stimulation, while its silencing triggered apoptosis. Higher cATM levels made AAA-derived SMCs less vulnerable to oxidative stress, compared with control SMCs. These data suggest that cATM contributes to elicit an adaptive oxidative-stress response in SMCs and provides a reliable AAA disease signature.

Abstract
Understanding speciation is one of the cornerstones of biological diversity research. Currently, speciation is often understood as a continuous process of divergence that continues until genetic or other incompatibilities minimize or prevent interbreeding. The Palearctic snake genus Natrix is an ideal group to study speciation, as it comprises taxa representing distinct stages of the speciation process, ranging from widely interbreeding parapatric taxa through parapatric species with very limited gene flow in narrow hybrid zones to widely sympatric species. To understand the evolution of reproductive isolation through time, we have sequenced the genomes of all five species within this genus and two additional subspecies. We used both long-read and short-read methods to sequence and de-novo-assemble two high-quality genomes (Natrix h. helvetica, Natrix n. natrix) to their 1.7 Gb length with a contig N50 of 4.6 Mbp and 1.5 Mbp, respectively, and used these as references to assemble the remaining short-read-based genomes. Our phylogenomic analyses yielded a well-supported dated phylogeny and evidence for a surprisingly complex history of interspecific gene flow, including between widely sympatric species. Furthermore, evidence for gene flow was also found for currently allopatric species pairs. Genetic exchange among these well-defined, distinct, and several million-year-old reptile species emphasizes that speciation and maintenance of species distinctness can occur despite continued genetic exchange.
How the brain evolved remains a mystery. The goal of this thesis is to understand the fundamental processes that are behind the evolutionary history of the brain. Amniotes appeared 320 million years ago with the transition from water to land. This early group bifurcated into sauropsids (reptiles and birds) and synapsids (mammals). Amniote brains evolved separately and display obvious structural and functional differences. Although those differences reflect brain diversification, all amniote brains share a common ancestor and their brains show multiple derived similarities: equivalent structures, networks, circuits and cell types have been preserved during millions of years. Finding these differences and similarities will help us understand brain historical evolution and function. Studying brain evolution can be approached from various levels, including brain structure, circuits, cell types, and genes. We propose a focus on cell types for a more comprehensive understanding of brain evolution. Neurons are the basic building blocks and the most diverse cell types in the brain. Their evolution reflects changes in the developmental processes that produce them, which in turn may shape the neural circuits they belong to. However, there is currently a lack of a unified criteria for studying the homology of connectivity and development between neurons. A neuron’s transcriptome is a molecular representation of its identity, connectivity, and developmental/evolutionary history. Hence the comparison of neuronal transcriptomes within and across species is a new and transformative development in the study of brain evolution. As an alternative, comparing neuronal transcriptomes across different species can provide insights into the evolution of the brain. We propose that comparing transcriptomes can be a way to fill this gap and unify these criteria. In previous studies, published in Science (Tosches et al., 2018) and Nature (Norimoto et al., 2020), we leveraged scRNAseq in reptiles to re-evaluate the origins and evolution of the mammalian cerebral cortex and claustrum. Motivated by the success of this approach, in this thesis we have now expanded single-cell profiling to the entire brain of a lizard species, the Australian dragon Pogona vitticeps, with a special focus in thalamus and prethalamus of. This approach allowed us to study the evolution of neuron types in amniotes. Therefore, we aimed to build a multilevel atlas of the lizard brain based on histology and transcriptomic and compare it to an equal mouse dataset (Zeisel et al., 2018).
Our atlas reveals a general structure that is consistent with that for other amniote brains, allowing us to make a direct comparison between lizard and mouse, despite their evolutionary divergence 320 million years ago. Through our analysis of the transcriptomes present in various neuron types, we have uncovered a core of conserved classes and discovered a fascinating dichotomy of new and conserved neuron types throughout the brain. This research challenges the traditional notion that certain brain regions are more conserved than others.
Our research also has uncovered the evolutionary history of the lizard thalamus and prethalamus by comparing them to homologous brain regions of the mouse. This pioneering research sheds new light on our understanding of the evolutionary history of the lizard brain. We propose a new classification of the lizard thalamic nuclei based on
transcriptomics. Our research revealed that the thalamic neuron types in lizards can be grouped into two large, conserved categories from the medial to lateral thalamus. These categories are encoded by a common set of effector genes, linking theories based on connectivity and molecular studies of these areas. In our data we have seen that there is a conservation of the medial-lateral transcriptomic axis in mouse and lizard, this conservation was most likely already present in the common ancestor. Although there is a shared medial-lateral axis, a deeper study of the thalamic cell types has allowed us to see the existence of a partial diversification of the thalamic population, specifically in the sensory-related lateral thalamus; in opposition, the medial thalamic nuclei neuron-types have been preserved.
On the other hand, the comparison with the mammalian prethalamus allowed us to confirm that the lizard ventromedial thalamic neuron types are homologous to mouse reticular thalamic neuron types (Díaz et al., 1994), even if they do not express the classical Reticular thalamic nucleus (RTn) marker PV/pvalb. We also discovered that there has been a simplification in the mammalian prethalamic neuron types in favor of an increase in the number of Interneurons (IN) types within their thalamus. We suggest that the loss of GABAergic neuronal types in the mammalian prethalamus is linked to the need for a more efficient control of the thalamo-pallial communication in mammals, while in lizards, where thalamo-pallial communication is probably simpler, the diversity prethalamus presents a higher diversity.
Motivated by the wealth of proposals and realizations of nontrivial topological phases in EuCd2As2, such as a Weyl semimetallic state and the recently discussed semimetallic versus semiconductor behavior in this system, we analyze in this work the role of the delicate interplay of Eu magnetism, strain and pressure on the realization of such phases. For that we invoke a combination of a group theoretical analysis with ab initio density functional theory calculations and uncover a rich phase diagram with various non-trivial topological phases beyond a Weyl semimetallic state, such as axion and topological crystalline insulating phases, and discuss their realization.

Lattice strains of appropriate symmetry have served as an excellent tool to explore the interaction of superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors with nematic and stripe spin-density wave (SSDW) order, which are both closely tied to an orthorhombic distortion. In this work, we contribute to a broader understanding of the coupling of strain to superconductivity and competing normal-state orders by studying CaKFe4As4 under large, in-plane strains of B1g and B2g symmetry. In contrast to the majority of iron-based superconductors, pure CaKFe4As4 exhibits superconductivity with relatively high transition temperature of Tc∼35 K in proximity of a non-collinear, tetragonal, hedgehog spin-vortex crystal (SVC) order. Through experiments, we demonstrate an anisotropic in-plane strain response of Tc, which is reminiscent of the behavior of other pnictides with nematicity. However, our calculations suggest that in CaKFe4As4, this anisotropic response correlates with the one of the SVC fluctuations, highlighting the close interrelation of magnetism and high-Tc superconductivity. By suggesting moderate B2g strains as an effective parameter to change the stability of SVC and SSDW, we outline a pathway to a unified phase diagram of iron-based superconductivity.
The polarization of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured relative to the second and third harmonic event planes in isobar Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. This is the first experimental evidence of the hyperon polarization by the triangular flow originating from the initial density fluctuations. The amplitudes of the sine modulation for the second and third harmonic results are comparable in magnitude, increase from central to peripheral collisions, and show a mild pT dependence. The azimuthal angle dependence of the polarization follows the vorticity pattern expected due to elliptic and triangular anisotropic flow, and qualitatively disagree with most hydrodynamic model calculations based on thermal vorticity and shear induced contributions. The model results based on one of existing implementations of the shear contribution lead to a correct azimuthal angle dependence, but predict centrality and pT dependence that still disagree with experimental measurements. Thus, our results provide stringent constraints on the thermal vorticity and shear-induced contributions to hyperon polarization. Comparison to previous measurements at RHIC and the LHC for the second-order harmonic results shows little dependence on the collision system size and collision energy.
We search for the semi-leptonic decays Λ + c → Λπ+π−e+νe and Λ + c → pK0 Sπ−e+νe in a sample of 4.5 fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data collected in the center-of-mass energy region between 4.600 GeV and 4.699 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII. No significant signals are observed, and the upper limits on the decay branching fractions are set to be B(Λ+c → Λπ+π−e+νe ) < 3.9 × 10−4 and B(Λ + c → pK0Sπ−e+νe ) < 3.3 × 10−4 at the 90% confidence level, respectively.
Based on 4.5 fb−1 data taken at seven center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.600 to 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fractions of Λ + c → Σ + + hadrons relative to Λ + c → Σ +π +π −. Combining with the world average branching fraction of Λ + c → Σ +π +π −, their branching fractions are measured to be (0.377 ± 0.042 ± 0.020 ± 0.021)% for Λ + c → Σ +K+K−, (0.200 ± 0.023 ± 0.011 ± 0.011)% for Λ + c → Σ+K+π−, (0.414 ± 0.080 ± 0.030 ± 0.023)% for Λ + c → Σ +φ and (0.197 ± 0.036 ± 0.009 ± 0.011)% for Λ + c → Σ +K+K−(non-φ). In all the above results, the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic and the third are from external input of the branching fraction of Λ + c → Σ +π +π −. Since no signal for Λ + c → Σ +K+π−π 0 is observed, the upper limit of its branching fraction is determined to be 0.13% at the 90% confidence level.
With data samples collected with the BESIII detector at seven energy points at √s = 3.68 − 3.71 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 333 pb−1, we present a study of the Λ transverse polarization in the e+e− → ΛΛ¯ reaction. The signifcance of polarization by combining the seven energy points is found to be 2.6σ including the systematic uncertainty, which implies a non-zero phase between the transition amplitudes of the ΛΛ¯ helicity states. The modulus ratio and the relative phase of EM-psionic form factors combined with all energy points are measured to be RΨ = 0.71+0.10−0.10 ± 0.03 and ∆ΦΨ = 23+8.8−8.0 ± 1.6◦, where the frst uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.
The cross sections of the 𝑒+𝑒−→𝜙𝜂′ process at center-of-mass energies from 3.508 to 4.951 GeV are measured with high precision using 26.1 fb−1 data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The cross sections are of the order of a few picobarn and decrease as the center-of-mass energy increases as 𝑠−𝑛/2 with 𝑛=4.35±0.14. This result is in agreement with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model prediction of 𝑛=3.5±0.9. In addition, the charmless decay 𝜓(3770)→𝜙𝜂′ is searched for by fitting the measured cross sections, yet no significant signal is observed. The upper limit of ℬ(𝜓(3770)→𝜙𝜂′) at the 90% confidence level is determined to be 2.3×10−5.
Introduction: The optimal treatment of patients with spinal infections remains a controversial topic. Within Europe, fundamentally different therapeutic concepts are found. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the outcome of patients who received surgical vs. antibiotic treatment alone for primary pyogenic spondylodiscitis in an international cohort analysis.
Materials and Methods: The retrospectively compiled databases of tertiary high-volume spine centers served as the baseline for this study. All documented cases of primary spondylodiscitis treated surgically and conservatively in the period of 2017-2022 were included and grouped according to the therapeutic concept: conservative vs. surgical treatment. Independent investigators collected the relevant clinical and radiological data. The primary endpoint of this study was mortality rate; secondary endpoints were relapse rate and persisting neurological deficit.
Results: A total of 392 patients were included in the analysis (155 females with a mean age of 68 years). Of these, 95 cases were treated conservatively (CoT) and 297 cases were treated surgically (SuT). There was no significant difference (p<0.01) related to patient’s disease characteristics: Lumbar was the main location (n=240, CoT 58/ SuT 182, p=0.97) followed by thoracic (n=70, CoT 24/ SuT 46, p=0,03) and cervical (n=47, CoT 7/ SuT 40, p=0.11) region. A multilocular spinal infection was present in 32 patients (CoT 3/ SuT 29, p=0.04). 181 cases (CoT 36/ SuT 145, p=0.06) presented with an epidural abscess. Neurological deficits were recorded in 100 cases (CoT 26/ SuT 74, p=0.63), and septic conditions in 88 cases (CoT 26/ SuT 62, p=0.19). Pre-existing conditions like Diabetes (p=0.57), renal failure (p= 0.97), hepatopathy (p= 0.15), malignoma (p=0.39) or i.v. drug abuse (p=0.93) did also not differ between the groups. The mortality rate of all conservatively treated was 24.2% (23 cases) and 6.7% (20 cases) in all surgically treated patients (p<0.001). A follow-up of ≥ 6 weeks was available in 289 cases (CoT 83, SuT 206 ). In this subset of patients relapse of infection occurred in six (7.2%) and 23 (11.2%) cases in the conservative and early surgical treatment group, respectively (p=0.69). Persisting neurological deficit was recorded in 21 (25.3%) of conservatively treated and 51 (24.8%) of surgically treated cases (p=0.92).
Conclusion: Whereas relapse rates and persisting neurological deficit were not found to differ significantly, the results of this international data analyses, with their respective limitations, clearly support the growing evidence of a significantly reduced mortality rate after surgical therapy for primary pyogenic spondylodiscitis when compared to conservative treatment regimen.
Spinal Tumors / Infections (Spine Parallel Session v.3), September 27, 2023, 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Background: The optimal treatment of patients with spinal infections remains a controversial topic. While there is some consensus regarding the indication for surgical intervention in infections with neurologic deficit, significant deformity or progressive disease, other situations remain controversial. Within Europe, fundamentally different therapeutic concepts are found. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the outcome of patients who received surgical vs. antibiotic treatment alone for primary pyogenic spondylodiscitis in an international cohort analysis.

Most of conservatively treated patients were treated in the United Kingdom (CoT 81/ SuT 7), while most of the surgically treated cases were treated in Germany (CoT 14/ SuT 290). Can right‐wing terrorism increase support for far‐right populist parties and if so, why? Exploiting quasi‐random variation between successful and failed attacks across German municipalities, we find that successful attacks lead to significant increases in the vote share for the right‐wing, populist Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party in state elections. Investigating channels, we find that successful attacks lead to differential increases in turnout which are mainly captured by the AfD. Using the German SOEP, a longitudinal panel of individuals, we investigate terror’s impact on individual political attitudes. We first document that people residing in municipalities that experience successful or failed attacks are indistinguishable. We then show that successful terror leads individuals to prefer the AfD, adopt more populist attitudes and report significantly greater political participation at the local level. Terror also leads voters to migrate away from (some) mainstream parties to the AfD. We also find differential media reporting: successful attacks receive more media coverage among local and regional publishers, coverage which makes significantly more use of words related to Islam and terror. Our results hold despite the fact that most attacks are motivated by right‐wing causes and targeted against migrants. Moreover, successful attacks that receive the most media coverage have nearly double the effect on the AfD vote share in state elections and they also increase the AfD vote share in Federal elections, highlighting media salience as a driver of our overall results.

Assessing communicative accommodation in the context of large language models : a semiotic approach
(2023)
Recently, significant strides have been made in the ability of transformer-based chatbots to hold natural conversations. However, despite a growing societal and scientific relevancy, there are few frameworks systematically deriving what it means for a chatbot conversation to be natural. The present work approaches this question through the phenomenon of communicative accommodation/interactive alignment. While there is existing research suggesting that humans adapt communicatively to technologies, the aim of this work is to explore the accommodation of AI-chatbots to an interlocutor. Its research interest is twofold: Firstly, the structural ability of the transformer-architecture to support accommodative behavior is assessed using a frame constructed in accordance with existing accommodationtheories.
This results in hypotheses to be tested empirically. Secondly, since effective accommodation produces the same outcomes, regardless of technical implementation, a behavioral experiment is proposed. Existing quantifications of accommodation are reconciled,
extended, and modified to apply them to nonhuman-interlocutors. Thus, a measurement scheme is suggested which evaluates textual data from text-only, double-blind interactions between chatbots and humans, chatbots and chatbots and humans and humans. Using the generated human-to-human convergence data as a reference, the degree of artificial accommodation can be evaluated. Accommodation as a central facet of artificial interactivity can thus be evaluated directly against its theoretical paradigm, i.e. human interaction. In case that subsequent examinations show that chatbots effectively do not accommodate, there may be a new form of algorithmic bias, emerging from the aggregate accommodation towards chatbots but not towards humans. Thus, existing, hegemonic semantics could be cemented through chatbot-learning. Meanwhile, the ability to effectively accommodate would render chatbots vastly more susceptible to misuse.
Using (1.0087±0.0044)×1010 𝐽/𝜓 events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the first search for the baryon and lepton number violating decays Ξ0→𝐾−𝑒+ with Δ(𝐵−𝐿)=0 and Ξ0→𝐾+𝑒− with |Δ(𝐵−𝐿)|=2, where 𝐵 (𝐿) is the baryon (lepton) number. While no signal is observed, the upper limits on the branching fractions of these two decays are set to ℬ(Ξ0→𝐾−𝑒+)<3.6×10−6 and ℬ(Ξ0→𝐾+𝑒−)<1.9×10−6 at the 90% confidence level, respectively. These results offer a direct probe of baryon number violating interactions involving a strange quark.
The Cabbibo-favored decay Λ+c→Ξ0K+π0 is studied for the first time using 6.1 fb−1 of e+e− collision data at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.840 GeV, collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. With a double-tag method, the branching fraction of the three-body decay Λ+c→Ξ0K+π0 is measured to be (7.79±1.46±0.71)×10−3, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The branching fraction of the two-body decay Λ+c→Ξ(1530)0K+ is (5.99±1.04±0.29)×10−3, which is consistent with the previous result of (5.02±0.99±0.31)×10−3. In addition, the upper limit on the branching fraction of the doubly Cabbibo-suppressed decay Λ+c→nK+π0 is 7.1×10−4 at the 90% confidence level. The upper limits on the branching fractions of Λ+c→Σ0K+π0 and ΛK+π0 are also determined to be 1.8×10−3 and 2.0×10−3, respectively.
Evidence for the singly Cabibbo suppressed decay Λ+c→pπ0 is reported for the first time with a statistical significance of 3.7σ based on 6.0 fb−1 of e+e− collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.843 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The absolute branching fraction of Λ+c→pπ0 is measured to be (1.56+0.72−0.58±0.20)×10−4, which distinctly exceeds the upper limit measured by Belle experiment. Combining with the branching fraction of Λ+c→nπ+, (6.6±1.3)×10−4, the ratio of the branching fractions of Λ+c→nπ+ and Λ+c→pπ0 is calculated to be 3.2+2.2−1.2. As an important input for the theoretical models describing the decay mechanisms of charmed baryons, our result indicates that the non-factorizable contributions play an essential role and their interference with the factorizable contributions should not be significant. In addition, the absolute branching fraction of Λ+c→pη is measured to be (1.63±0.31stat±0.11syst)×10−3, which is consistent with previous measurements.

Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 22.42 fb−1 collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the cross sections of the $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow\etaJ/\psi$ process at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. Three structures are observed in the line shape of the measured cross sections. A maximum-likelihood fit with ψ(4040), two additional resonances, and a non-resonant component is performed. The mass and width of the first additional state are (4219.7±2.5±4.5)MeV/c2 and (80.7±4.4±1.4)MeV, respectively, consistent with the ψ(4230). For the second state, the mass and width are (4386±13±17)MeV/c2 and (177±32±13)MeV, respectively, consistent with the ψ(4360). The first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The statistical significance of ψ(4040) is 8.0σ and those for ψ(4230) and ψ(4360) are more than 10.0σ.
We present the first observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ+c→ΛK+π0 with a significance of 5.7σ and the first evidence of Λ+c→ΛK+π+π− decay with a significance of 3.1σ, based on e+e− annihilation data recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6.4 fb−1, in the center-of-mass energy range from 4.600 GeV to 4.950 GeV. We determine the branching fractions of Λ+c→ΛK+π0 and Λ+c→ΛK+π+π− relative to their Cabibbo-favored counterparts to be B(Λ+c→ΛK+π0)B(Λ+c→Λπ+π0)=(2.09±0.39stat.±0.07syst.)×10−2 and B(Λ+c→ΛK+π+π−)B(Λ+c→Λπ+π+π−)=(1.13±0.41stat.±0.06syst.)×10−2, respectively. Moreover, by combining our measured result with the world average of B(Λ+c→Λπ+π0), we obtain the branching fraction B(Λ+c→ΛK+π0)=(1.49±0.27stat.±0.05syst.±0.08ref.)×10−3. This result significantly departs from theoretical predictions based on quark SU(3) flavor symmetry, which is underpinned by the presumption of meson pair S-wave amplitude dominance.
Using 2.93 fb−1 of e+e− collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy 3.773 GeV, we perform the first amplitude analysis of the decay D+ → π+π0π0 and determine the relative magnitudes and phases of different intermediate processes. The absolute branching fraction of D+ → π+π0π0 is measured to be (2.888 ± 0.058stat. ± 0.069syst.)%. The dominant intermediate processes are D+ → a1(1260)+(→ ρ+π0) and D+ → *0ρ+, with branching fractions of (8.66 ± 1.04stat. ± 1.39syst.) × 10−3 and (9.70 ± 0.81stat. ± 0.53syst.) × 10−3, respectively.
We report a search for a dark photon using 14.9~fb−1 of e+e− annihilation data taken at center-of-mass energies from 4.13 to 4.60~GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring. The dark photon is assumed to be produced in the radiative annihilation process of e+e− and to predominantly decay into light dark matter particles, which escape from the detector undetected. The mass range from 1.5 to 2.9~GeV is scanned for the dark photon candidate, and no significant signal is observed. The mass dependent upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the coupling strength parameter ϵ for a dark photon coupling with an ordinary photon vary between 1.6×10−3 and 5.7×10−3.

Precision measurements of the semileptonic decays 𝐷+𝑠→𝜂𝑒+𝜈𝑒 and 𝐷+𝑠→𝜂′𝑒+𝜈𝑒 are performed with 7.33 fb−1 of 𝑒+𝑒− collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector. The branching fractions obtained are ℬ(𝐷+𝑠→𝜂𝑒+𝜈𝑒) = (2.255±0.039stat±0.051syst)% and ℬ(𝐷+𝑠→𝜂′𝑒+𝜈𝑒)=(0.810±0.038stat±0.024syst)%. Combining these results with the ℬ(𝐷+→𝜂𝑒+𝜈𝑒) and ℬ(𝐷+→𝜂′𝑒+𝜈𝑒) obtained from previous BESIII measurements, the 𝜂−𝜂′ mixing angle in the quark flavor basis is determined to be 𝜙P=(40.0±2.0stat±0.6syst)°. Moreover, from the fits to the partial decay rates of 𝐷+𝑠→𝜂𝑒+𝜈𝑒 and 𝐷+𝑠→𝜂′𝑒+𝜈𝑒, the products of the hadronic transition form factors 𝑓𝜂(′)+(0) and the modulus of the 𝑐→𝑠 Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |𝑉𝑐𝑠| are determined by using different hadronic transition form factor parametrizations. Based on the two-parameter series expansion, the products 𝑓𝜂+(0)|𝑉𝑐𝑠| = 0.4519±0.0071stat±0.0065syst and 𝑓𝜂′+(0)|𝑉𝑐𝑠| = 0.525±0.024stat±0.009syst are extracted. All results determined in this work supersede those measured in the previous BESIII analyses based on the 3.19 fb−1 subsample of data at 4.178 GeV.

(2023)
Using ð1.0087 0.0044Þ × 1010 J=ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the process Ξ0n → Ξ−p is studied, where the Ξ0 baryon is produced in the process J=ψ → Ξ0Ξ¯ 0 and the neutron is a component of the 9 Be, 12C, and 197Au nuclei in the beam pipe. A clear signal is observed with a statistical significance of 7.1σ. The cross section of the reaction Ξ0 þ 9 Be → Ξ− þ p þ 8 Be is determined to be σðΞ0 þ 9 Be → Ξ− þ p þ 8 BeÞ¼ð22.1 5.3stat 4.5sysÞ mb at the Ξ0 momentum of 0.818 GeV=c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No significant H-dibaryon signal is observed in the Ξ−p final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.
Using an 𝑒+𝑒− collision data sample of (27.08±0.14)×108 𝜓(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of 𝜒𝑐𝐽→Ω−¯Ω+ (𝐽=0, 1, 2) decays with significances of 5.6𝜎, 6.4𝜎, and 18𝜎, respectively, where the 𝜒𝑐𝐽 mesons are produced in the radiative 𝜓(3686) decays. The branching fractions are determined to be ℬ(𝜒𝑐0→Ω−¯Ω+) = (3.51±0.54±0.29)×10−5, ℬ(𝜒𝑐1→Ω−¯Ω+)=(1.49±0.23±0.10)×10−5, and ℬ(𝜒𝑐2→Ω−¯Ω+)=(4.52±0.24±0.18)×10−5, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.
Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.3 fb−1 collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.23 to 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector, we observe the process e+e− → π0π0ψ2(3823) for the first time with a statistical significance of 6.0 standard deviations. The ratio of average cross sections for e+e− → π0π0ψ2(3823) and π+π−ψ2(3823) is determined to be R = σ[e+e− → π0π0ψ2(3823)] σ[e+e−→π+π−ψ2(3823)] = 0.57 ± 0.14 ± 0.05, which is consistent with expectations from isospin symmetry. Here and below, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The mass of the ψ2(3823) is measured to be M[ψ2(3823)] = 3824.5±2.4±1.0 MeV/c2. Due to the limited data sample, an upper limit of 18.8 MeV at 90% confidence level is set on the intrinsic width of ψ2(3823).
The Ξ0 asymmetry parameters are measured using entangled quantum Ξ0 − Ξ¯ 0 pairs from a sample of ð448.1 2.9Þ × 106 ψð3686Þ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. The relative phase between the transition amplitudes of the Ξ0Ξ¯ 0 helicity states is measured to be ΔΦ ¼ −0.050 0.150 0.020 rad, which implies that there is no obvious polarization at the current level of statistics. The decay parameters of the Ξ0 hyperon ðαΞ0 ; αΞ¯ 0 ; ϕΞ0 ; ϕΞ¯ 0 Þ and the angular distribution parameter ½αψð3686Þ and ΔΦ are measured simultaneously for the first time. In addition, the CP asymmetry observables are determined to be AΞ0 CP ¼ ðαΞ0 þ αΞ¯ 0 Þ=ðαΞ0 − αΞ¯ 0 Þ ¼ −0.007 0.082 0.025 and ΔϕΞ0 CP ¼ ðϕΞ0 þ ϕΞ¯ 0 Þ=2 ¼ −0.079 0.082 0.010 rad, which are consistent with CP conservation.
The equation of state (EoS) of matter at extremely high temperatures and densities is currently not fully understood, and remains a major challenge in the field of nuclear physics. Neutron stars harbor such extreme conditions and therefore serve as celestial laboratories for constraining the dense matter EoS. In this thesis, we present a novel algorithm that utilizes the idea of Bayesian analysis and the computational efficiency of neural networks to reconstruct the dense matter equation of state from mass-radius observations of neutron stars. We show that the results are compatible with those from earlier works based on conventional methods, and are in agreement with the limits on tidal deformabilities obtained from the gravitational wave event, GW170817. We also observe that the resulting squared speed of sound from the reconstructed EoS features a peak, indicating a likely convergence to the conformal limit at asymptotic densities, as expected from quantum chromodynamics. The novel algorithm can also be applied across various fields faced with computational challenges in solving inverse problems. We further examine the efficiency of deep learning methods for analyzing gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences in this thesis. In particular, we develop a deep learning classifier to segregate simulated gravitational wave data into three classes: signals from binary black hole mergers, signals from binary neutron star mergers, or white noise without any signals. A second deep learning algorithm allows for the regression of chirp mass and combined tidal deformability from simulated binary neutron star mergers. An accurate estimation of these parameters is crucial to constrain the underlying EoS. Lastly, we explore the effects of finite temperatures on the binary neutron star merger remnant from GW170817. Isentropic EoSs are used to infer the frequencies of the rigidly rotating remnant and are noted to be significantly lower compared to previous estimates from zero temperature EoSs. Overall, this thesis presents novel deep learning methods to constrain the neutron star EoS, which will prove useful in future, as more observational data is expected in the upcoming years.
After myocardial infarction in the adult heart the remaining, non-infarcted tissue adapts to compensate the loss of functional tissue. This adaptation requires changes in gene expression networks, which are mostly controlled by transcription regulating proteins. Long non-coding transcripts (lncRNAs) are taking part in fine-tuning such gene programs. We describe and characterize the cardiomyocyte specific lncRNA Sweetheart RNA (Swhtr), an approximately 10 kb long transcript divergently expressed from the cardiac core transcription factor coding gene Nkx2-5. We show that Swhtr is dispensable for normal heart development and function but becomes essential for the tissue adaptation process after myocardial infarction in murine males. Re-expressing Swhtr from an exogenous locus rescues the Swhtr null phenotype. Genes that depend on Swhtr after cardiac stress are significantly occupied and therefore most likely regulated by NKX2-5. The Swhtr transcript interacts with NKX2-5 and disperses upon hypoxic stress in cardiomyocytes, indicating an auxiliary role of Swhtr for NKX2-5 function in tissue adaptation after myocardial injury.
Anthropogenic activities have a major impact on our planet and rapidly drive biodiversity loss in ecosystems at a global scale. Particularly over the last century, rising CO2 emissions significantly raised global temperatures and increased the intensity and frequency of droughts and heatwaves. Additionally, agricultural land use and fossil fuel combustion contribute to the continuous release of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) into ecosystems worldwide through extensive fertilization and deposition from the atmosphere. It is important to understand how these rapid changes affect the evolution of plant populations and their adaptive potential. Adaptation by natural selection (i.e., adaptive evolution) within a few generations is an essential process as a response to rapid environmental changes. Rapid evolution of plant populations can be detected by using the so-called resurrection approach. Here, diaspores (i.e., seeds) from a population are collected before (ancestors) and after (descendants) a potential selection pressure (e.g., consecutive years of drought or changes in nutrient supply). Comparing phenotypes of ancestors and descendants in a common environment such as an outside garden, greenhouse, or climate chamber, may then reveal evolutionary changes. Ideally, plants are first grown in a common environment for an intermediate refresher generation to reduce parental and storage effects.
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the occurrence of adaptive evolution in natural plant populations in response to rapidly changing environments over the past three decades. I conducted three experiments using the resurrection approach to generate comprehensive data on the adaptive processes that acted on three plant populations from three different species over the last three decades. Furthermore, I filled knowledge gaps in plant evolutionary ecology and conceptually developed the resurrection approach further.
In Chapter I, I performed a novel approach by testing for adaptive evolution in natural plant populations using the resurrection approach in combination with in-situ transplantations. I cultivated seedlings from ancestors (23 – 26 years old) and contemporary descendants of three perennial species (Melica ciliata, Leontodon hispidus and Clinopodium vulgare) from calcareous grasslands in the greenhouse and In Chapter III, I assessed the reproducibility of phenotypic differences between genotypes among three different growth facilities (climate chamber, greenhouse, and outdoor garden). I also evaluated differences in phenotypic expression between plants grown after one vs. two intermediate generations (i.e., refresher generations). I performed this experiment within the framework of the resurrection approach and compared ancestors and descendants of the same population of Leontodon hispidus.
I observed very strong differences among plants growing in the different growth facilities. I found a significant interaction between the growth facility and the temporal origin (ancestors vs. descendants): descendants had significantly larger rosettes than ancestors only in the greenhouse and they flowered significantly later than ancestors exclusively in the climate chamber. I did not find significant differences between intermediate generations within the growth facilities. Overall, Chapter III shows that the use of a particular experimental system can dictate the presence and magnitude of phenotypic differences. This implies that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence when it comes to investigating genetically based trait differentiation among plant origins (in space or time). Experimental systems should be carefully designed to provide meaningful conditions, ideally mimicking the environmental conditions of the population’s origins. Finally, growing a second intermediate generation did not impact the genetic differences of ancestors and descendants within the environments, supporting the idea that only one intermediate generation may be sufficient to reduce detectable parental and storage effects.
The resurrection approach allows a better understanding of rapid plant adaptation, but some limitations deserve to be highlighted. I only studied one population per species, and Chapters II and III only focus on one population of L. hispidus, which is also hampering generalizations, as adaptive potential can vary greatly among populations of the same species. I only compared the ancestral genotypes to one descendant sample with a long time span in between (26 – 28 years), which makes it hard to pinpoint the selection agents that caused the genetic differentiation among the sampling years. Hence, closely monitoring biotic and abiotic factors of the studied populations between the ancestral and descendant sampling in future studies, would make identifying the responsible selection pressures more precise. I also recommend sampling multiple populations over consecutive years to improve the robustness of results and make generalizations more approachable.Furthermore, combining the resurrection approach with other methods such as in-situ transplantations will be valuable to offset the limitation that adaptations cannot be proven under artificial conditions (e.g., in the greenhouse).
The nucleus reuniens drives hippocampal goal‑directed trajectory sequences for route planning
(2023)
Goal-directed spatial navigation requires accurate estimates of one’s position and destination, as well as careful planning of a route between them to avoid known obstacles in the environment. Despite its general importance across species, the neural circuitry supporting the ability for route planning remains largely unclear. Previous studies described that place cells in the hippocampal CA1 encode the animal's next movement direction (Wood et al., 2000; Ito et al., 2015) and upcoming navigational routes (Pfeiffer & Foster, 2013). However, it has been shown that part of the CA1 activity representing the animal’s future behaviors is not necessarily generated in the hippocampus, but is derived from the medial prefrontal cortex (PFC) via the nucleus reuniens of the thalamus (RE) (Ito et al., 2015). Notably, the importance of the PFC in navigation has been demonstrated in several studies, including the recent finding of a goal map in the orbitofrontal cortex (Basu et al., 2021). Therefore, I hypothesized that information flow from the PFC to CA1 via the RE plays a key role in route planning.
To assess the animals' route planning ability, I designed a new navigation task in which a rat has to navigate to a fixed target location from various starting positions in an arena. Furthermore, by adding an L-shaped wall in the maze and removing all light sources in the experimental room, this task forced the animals to plan a wall-avoiding route without relying on direct sensory perceptions. I confirmed that rats could learn this task successfully, memorizing the wall location and taking a smooth wall-avoidance route. To test the role of the RE, I inactivated RE neurons by expressing the inhibitory opsin SwiChR++, which resulted in a significant deficit in the animal’s route planning ability, taking a longer non-smooth path to the destination. By contrast, this manipulation did not affect navigation performance when a straight goal-directed route was available, suggesting a specific role of the RE in route planning. I further found that DREADDs-mediated inactivation of neurons in the bilateral hippocampi resulted in a similar deficit in route planning ability, implying cooperation between the RE and the hippocampus.
I finally examined the activity of hippocampal CA1 neurons with and without RE inactivation. While neurons in the hippocampus exhibited brief trajectory sequences corresponding to the animal’s subsequent goal-directed journey, I found that this goal-directed bias of trajectory events was significantly reduced by RE inactivation, likely associated with route-planning deficits in these animals.
Altogether, this dissertation demonstrates the role of the RE from both behavioral and neural coding perspectives, identifying a pivotal circuit element supporting the animal’s route-planning ability.
In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a global spin polarization, PH, of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons along the direction of the system angular momentum was discovered and measured across a broad range of collision energies and demonstrated a trend of increasing PH with decreasing sNN−−−√. A splitting between Λ and Λ¯ polarization may be possible due to their different magnetic moments in a late-stage magnetic field sustained by the quark-gluon plasma which is formed in the collision. The results presented in this study find no significant splitting at the collision energies of sNN−−−√=19.6 and 27 GeV in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase II using the STAR detector, with an upper limit of PΛ¯−PΛ<0.24% and PΛ¯−PΛ<0.35%, respectively, at a 95% confidence level. We derive an upper limit on the naïve extraction of the late-stage magnetic field of B<9.4⋅1012 T and B<1.4⋅1013 T at sNN−−−√=19.6 and 27 GeV, respectively, although more thorough derivations are needed. Differential measurements of PH were performed with respect to collision centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity. With our current acceptance of |y|<1 and uncertainties, we observe no dependence on transverse momentum and rapidity in this analysis. These results challenge multiple existing model calculations following a variety of different assumptions which have each predicted a strong dependence on rapidity in this collision-energy range.

Financial poverty, mobility and social participation are interrelated. This nexus makes old-age poverty a highly relevant issue in terms of transport-related social exclusion in an ageing society. To understand how financial poverty affects older people’s travel practices and how they cope with their limited financial resources, we conducted qualitative interviews with low-income older people (aged 60 and above) in Ronnenberg (Hanover region, Germany). Although all the respondents have comparably limited financial resources, using a practice theory perspective along the elements of materials, competences and meanings (Shove et al., 2012), we identified three different types of low-income older people by their travel practices: (i) active older people with multifaceted social interactions, (ii) neighbourhood-oriented older people with local interactions and (iii) home-centred older people with few social interactions. From our analysis, we conclude that financial poverty shapes each element of low-income older people’s travel practices and thereby increases the risk of transport-related social exclusion: (i) certain materials have to be financed, which is challenging or even impossible due to financial poverty; (ii) meanings of travel practices are strongly linked to other practices, thus, if (also for financial reasons) no or a limited range of destinations are mentioned, travel practices are restricted in their frequency and distance; and (iii) necessary competences to be mobile and engage in social activities despite low financial means seem to be differentially available or - more cautiously formulated – less often utilised by low-income older people, which may lead to them abandoning travel practices and related social activities.
Using 15.6 fb−1 of e+e− collision data collected at twenty-four center-of-mass energies from 4.0 to 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector, the helicity amplitudes of the process e+e−→π+π−ω are analyzed for the first time. Born cross section measurements of two-body intermediate resonance states with statistical significance greater than 5σ are presented, such as f0(500), f0(980), f2(1270), f0(1370), b1(1235)±, and ρ(1450)±. In addition, evidence of a resonance state in e+e−→π+π−ω production is found. The mass of this state obtained by line shape fitting is about 4.2 GeV/c2, which is consistent with the production of ψ(4160) or Y(4220).
Based on (10.09±0.04)×109 J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis of the decay J/ψ→ϕπ0η is performed. We observe for the first time two new structures on the ϕη invariant mass distribution, with statistical significances of 24.0σ and 16.9σ; the first with JPC = 1+−, mass M = (1911 ± 6 (stat.) ± 14 (sys.))~MeV/c2, and width Γ= (149 ± 12 (stat.) ± 23 (sys.))~MeV, the second with JPC = 1−−, mass M = (1996 ± 11 (stat.) ± 30 (sys.))~MeV/c2, and width Γ = (148 ± 16 (stat.) ± 66 (sys.))~MeV. These measurements provide important input for the strangeonium spectrum. In addition, the f0(980)−a0(980)0 mixing signal in J/ψ→ϕf0(980)→ϕa0(980)0 and the corresponding electromagnetic decay J/ψ→ϕa0(980)0 are measured with improved precision, providing crucial information to understand the nature of a0(980)0 and f0(980).
Although exercise guidelines now recommend exercise for patients with MCI, the long-term effects of exercise in patients with MCI has not been reviewed systematically. The aim was to assess (1) the effectiveness of exercise and physical activity (EXPA) interventions in improving long-term patient-relevant cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes in people with mild cognitive impairment, (2) how well the included trials reported details of the intervention, and (3) the extent to which reported endpoints were in line with patient preferences that were assessed in patient workshops. Following PRISMA guidelines, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis including randomized controlled trials. A total of ten studies were included after searching in six electronic sources from 1995 onwards. There is a trend that 6 + -month EXPA interventions improve global cognition 12 months after initiation. Evidence on long-term effects of EXPA interventions on non-cognitive health outcomes could not be meaningfully pooled and the individual studies reported mixed results. Workshop participants considered freedom from pain and stress, mood, motivation and self-efficacy to be important, but these outcomes were rarely addressed. Too little information is available on intervention details for EXPA programs to be replicated and confidently recommended for patients with MCI.
Using a sample of (10087±44)×106 J/ψ events, which is about fifty times larger than that was previously analyzed, a further investigation on the J/ψ→γ3(π+π−) decay is performed. A significant distortion at 1.84 GeV/c2 in the line-shape of the 3(π+π−) invariant mass spectrum is observed for the first time, which is analogous to the behavior of X(1835) and could be resolved by two overlapping resonant structures, X(1840) and X(1880). The new state X(1880) is observed with a statistical significance of 14.7σ. The mass and width of X(1880) are determined to be 1882.1±1.7±0.7 MeV/c2 and 30.7±5.5±2.4 MeV, respectively, which indicates the existence of a pp¯ bound state.
Geometry is part of the core of mathematics. It has been relevant ever since people have interacted with nature and its phenomena. Geometry’s relevance to the teaching and learning of mathematics can be emphasized, too. Nevertheless, a current potential shift in the topics of mathematics education to the detriment of geometry might be emerging. That is, other topics related to mathematics are seeming to grow in importance in comparison to geometry. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, geometry is an important component of current research in mathematics education. In the literature review, we elaborate relevant foci on the basis of current conference proceedings. By means of about 50 journal articles, five main topics are elaborated in more detail: geometric thinking and practices, geometric contents and topics, teacher education in geometry, argumentation and proof in geometry, as well as the use of digital tools for the teaching and learning of geometry. Conclusions and limitations for current and future research on geometry are formulated at the end of the article. In particular, the transfer to the practices of geometric teaching is explored on the basis of the elaborated research findings in order to combine both aspects of the teaching and learning of geometry.
Using 15.6 fb−1 of e+e− collision data collected at twenty-four center-of-mass energies from 4.0 to 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector, the helicity amplitudes of the process e+e− → π+π−ω are analyzed for the first time. Born cross section measurements of two-body intermediate resonance states with statistical significance greater than 5σ are presented, such as f0(500), f0(980), f2(1270), f0(1370), b1(1235)±, and ρ(1450)±. In addition, evidence of a resonance state in e+e− → π+π−ω production is found. The mass of this state obtained by line shape fitting is about 4.2 GeV/c2, which is consistent with the production of ψ(4160) or Y(4220).
We search for an axion-like particle (ALP) a through the process ψ(3686)→π+π−J/ψ, J/ψ→γa, a→γγ in a data sample of (2.71±0.01)×109 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector. No significant ALP signal is observed over the expected background, and the upper limits on the branching fraction of the decay J/ψ→γa and the ALP-photon coupling constant gaγγ are set at 95% confidence level in the mass range of 0.165≤ma≤2.84GeV/c2. The limits on B(J/ψ→γa) range from 8.3×10−8 to 1.8×10−6 over the search region, and the constraints on the ALP-photon coupling are the most stringent to date for 0.165≤ma≤1.468GeV/c2.
A light scalar X0 or vector X1 particles have been introduced as a possible explanation for the (g−2)μ anomaly and dark matter phenomena.
Using (8.998±0.039)×109 $\jpsi$ events collected by the BESIII detector, we search for a light muon philic scalar X0 or vector X1 in the processes J/ψ→μ+μ−X0,1 with X0,1 invisible decays. No obvious signal is found, and the upper limits on the coupling g′0,1 between the muon and the X0,1 particles are set to be between 1.1×10−3 and 1.0×10−2 for the X0,1 mass in the range of 1<M(X0,1)<1000~MeV/c2 at 90% confidence level.
Inverse modeling of circular lattices via orbit response measurements in the presence of degeneracy
(2023)
The number and location of beam position monitors (BPMs) and steerers with respect to the quadrupoles in a circular lattice can lead to degeneracy in the context of fitting linear optics and extracting lattice information from measured closed orbits. Furthermore, the measurement uncertainties due to the imperfection of BPMs and steerers can be propagated by the fitting process in ways that prohibit the successful extraction of discrepancies between lattice elements in the real machine and their description in the corresponding model. We systematically studied the influence of the placement of BPMs and steerers on the reconstruction of linear optics and corresponding lattice information. The derivative of orbit response coefficients with respect to the quadrupole strengths, the Jacobian, is derived as an analytical formula. This analytical version of the Jacobian is used to further derive the theoretical limitations of fitting linear optics from closed orbits in terms of the placement of BPMs and steerers. It is further demonstrated that when evaluating the Jacobian during the fitting procedure, the analytical version can be used in place of the conventional finite-difference computation. This allows for greatly improved efficiency when computing the Jacobian during each iteration of the fitting procedure. The approach is tested with large-scale simulations and the findings are verified by measurement data taken on SIS18 synchrotron at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. The presented methods are of general nature and can be applied to other accelerator lattices as well. The fitting procedure by using the analytical Jacobian is tested in conjunction with various methods for mitigating quasidegeneracy and the results agree with those obtained by using the conventional Jacobian via finite-difference approximation.

Pericytes are capillary-associated mural cells involved in the maintenance and the stability of the vascular network. This thesis aims to investigate the role of pericytes in the heart in the context of ageing and disease. We highlight the malignant effects of the remodelling in the heart and stress the focus on the role of cardiac pericytes in this context. We show that ageing reduces pericyte coverage and that myocardial infarction (MI) causes an activation of these cells. Single-nuclei and single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of murine hearts further revealed that the expression of the Regulator of G-protein signalling 5 (Rgs5) is reduced in cardiac pericytes both in ageing and transiently at day 1 and day 3 after MI. The loss of RGS5 in pericytes drives an entropic state of these mural cells characterized by morphological changes, excessive extracellular deposition and enhanced Gaq mediated GPCR signalling. The deletion of RGS5 in pericytes causes cardiac systolic dysfunction, induces myocardial fibrosis, and drives the activation of cardiac fibroblasts in a TGFb-dependent manner. In conclusion, our results describe the importance of pericytes maintaining cardiac homeostasis, identify RGS5 as a key regulator of this process and propose pericytes as crucial mediators of cardiac fibrosis and possible therapeutic targets to prevent cardiovascular disease.
In natural environments, background noise can degrade the integrity of acoustic signals, posing a problem for animals that rely on their vocalizations for communication and navigation. A simple behavioral strategy to combat acoustic interference would be to restrict call emissions to periods of low-amplitude or no noise. Using audio playback and computational tools for the automated detection of over 2.5 million vocalizations from groups of freely vocalizing bats, we show that bats (Carollia perspicillata) can dynamically adapt the timing of their calls to avoid acoustic jamming in both predictably and unpredictably patterned noise. This study demonstrates that bats spontaneously seek out temporal windows of opportunity for vocalizing in acoustically crowded environments, providing a mechanism for efficient echolocation and communication in cluttered acoustic landscapes.
Jahrhundert zunehmend an Bedeutung.
Tobacco smoke-associated particulate matter emissions in a car cabin using the TAPaC platform
(2023)
Im ersten Teil dieser Dissertation wird die neuartige TAPaC Messplattform (tobacco-associated particulate matter emissions inside a car cabin: establishment of a new measuring platform) vorgestellt.
The knowledge of the material budget with a high precision is fundamental for measurements of direct photon production using the photon conversion method due to its direct impact on the total systematic uncertainty. Moreover, it influences many aspects of the charged-particle reconstruction performance. In this article, two procedures to determine data-driven corrections to the material-budget description in ALICE simulation software are developed. One is based on the precise knowledge of the gas composition in the Time Projection Chamber. The other is based on the robustness of the ratio between the produced number of photons and charged particles, to a large extent due to the approximate isospin symmetry in the number of produced neutral and charged pions. Both methods are applied to ALICE data allowing for a reduction of the overall material budget systematic uncertainty from 4.5% down to 2.5%. Using these methods, a locally correct material budget is also achieved. The two proposed methods are generic and can be applied to any experiment in a similar fashion.
