We present a measurement of e+e− pair production in central PbAu collisions at 158A GeV/c. As reported earlier, a significant excess of the e+e− pair yield over the expectation from hadron decays is observed. The improved mass resolution of the present data set, recorded with the upgraded CERES experiment at the CERN-SPS, allows for a comparison of the data with different theoretical approaches. The data clearly favor a substantial in-medium broadening of the ρ spectral function over a density-dependent shift of the ρ pole mass. The in-medium broadening model implies that baryon induced interactions are the key mechanism to the observed modifications of the ρ meson at SPS energy.
LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform Working Group for the LISA Consortium. It provides a review of the current state of waveform models for LISA sources, and describes the significant challenges that must yet be overcome.
In den Jahren 2002 bis 2005 wurden in Thüringen zwei
Jungvögel und sieben Altvögel mit Solar-Satelliten-
Telemetriesendern markiert, die bis Ende 2008 2686
Ortungen auf der Basis des Dopplereffektes ermöglichten.
Die Genauigkeit der meisten Ortungen war nicht
sehr groß, jedoch für Untersuchungen zum Zugverhalten
ausreichend.
Insgesamt konnten im Herbst acht Wegzüge nach
Spanien und im Frühjahr vier Heimzüge ins Brutgebiet
telemetriert werden. Außer bei einem Jungvogel, der
bereits im August abzog und 47 Tage bis nach Spanien
benötigte, lag der Zugbeginn in der ersten Oktoberhälfte.
Die Ankunft im Frühjahr erfolgte vom 5. bis 12.
März. Die Rotmilane überwanden auf dem Zug ins
Winterquartier Entfernungen zwischen 1450 und 2320
km, wofür die Altvögel 12 bis 28 Tage benötigten. Der
Frühjahrszug verlief etwas zügiger in 8 bis 22 Tagen.
Ein Weibchen, das über fünf Zugperioden telemetriert
werden konnte, verbrachte die ersten beiden Winter
im selben Gebiet in Südwestspanien und flog in der
dritten Zugperiode nur noch bis Nordspanien. Dort
fand Ende Dezember ein Wechsel des Winterquartiers
über 130 km statt. Im vierten Untersuchungsjahr überwinterte
es im Brutgebiet. Im folgenden Jahr zog das
Weibchen bereits eine Woche früher als in den ersten
drei Jahren nach Westspanien ab, wo es im Dezember
tot gefunden wurde.
Drei Mitglieder einer Familie (Männchen und zwei
Junge) zogen getrennt, und die Jungvögel suchten unterschiedliche
Winterquartiere auf. Neben den Ergebnissen der Telemetrie wurden
durch die individuelle Erkennbarkeit der Rotmilane
anhand der PTTs weitere Erkenntnisse gewonnen. So
konnte die Verdrängung eines Paares aus dem Brutgebiet
durch andere Rotmilane nachgewiesen werden
und ein über fünf Brutperioden kontrolliertes Weibchen
hatte in dieser Zeit mindestens vier verschiedene
Partner.
Von den neun besenderten Vögeln kamen vermutlich
sieben Tiere um, zwei Männchen und ein Weibchen im
Brutgebiet, ein Männchen auf dem Zug und zwei Jungvögel
und ein Weibchen im Überwinterungsgebiet. Ein
Weibchen trägt derzeit (Sommer 2009) noch den Sender
und hat seit der Besenderung im Alter von drei
Jahren jährlich (bisher siebenmal) erfolgreich Jungvögel
aufgezogen. Bei einem Altvogel wurde der Sender
entfernt, als er wiedergefangen wurde.
Background: Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease, leading to thinning of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL). The exact influence of ocular, cardiovascular, morphometric, lifestyle and cognitive factors on RNFL thickness (RNFLT) is unknown and was analysed in a subgroup of the Gutenberg Health Study (GHS).
Methods: Global peripapillary RNFLT was measured in 3224 eyes of 1973 subjects (49% female) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The association of age, sex, ocular, cardiovascular, morphometric, lifestyle and cognitive factors on RNFLT was analysed using Pearson correlation coefficient and fitting a linear mixed model.
Results: In the univariable analysis highest correlations were found for axial length (r = -0.27), spherical equivalent (r = 0.24), and glaucoma (r = -0.15) (p<0.0001, respectively). Other significant correlations with RNFLT were found for age, sex, intraocular pressure, systemic hypertension and systolic blood pressure, previous eye surgery, cholesterol, homocysteine, history of coronary artery disease, history of myocardial infarction, apnoea, diabetes and alcohol intake, p<0.05, respectively. Body length, body weight, BMI, diastolic blood pressure, blood glucose, HbA1c, history of apoplexy, cognitive function, peripheral artery disease, tinnitus, migraine, nicotine intake, central corneal thickness, and pseudophakia were not significantly correlated with RNFLT. The regression model revealed a significant relationship between RNFLT and age in decades (p<0.02), spherical equivalent (p<0.0001), axial length (p<0.0001), glaucoma (p<0.0001), tinnitus (p = 0.04), apnoea (p = 0.047), homocysteine (p = 0.05) and alcohol intake >10g/d for women and >20g/d for men (p = 0.02). Glaucoma, apnoea, higher homocysteine, higher alcohol intake and higher axial length as well as age were related to decreased RNFLT while higher spherical equivalent or history for tinnitus were related to thicker RNFL.
Conclusion: RNFLT is related to age, ocular parameters and lifestyle factors. Considering these parameters in normative databases could improve the evaluation of peripapillary RNFLT. It is necessary to evaluate if a reduction of alcohol intake as well as the therapy of apnea or high homocysteine levels could positively influence RNFLT.
Anthropogenic climate change is expected to impact ecosystem structure, biodiversity and ecosystem services in Africa profoundly. We used the adaptive Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (aDGVM), which was originally developed and tested for Africa, to quantify sources of uncertainties in simulated African potential natural vegetation towards the end of the 21st century. We forced the aDGVM with regionally downscaled high‐resolution climate scenarios based on an ensemble of six general circulation models (GCMs) under two representative concentration pathways (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5). Our study assessed the direct effects of climate change and elevated CO2 on vegetation change and its plant‐physiological drivers. Total increase in carbon in aboveground biomass in Africa until the end of the century was between 18% to 43% (RCP4.5) and 37% to 61% (RCP8.5) and was associated with woody encroachment into grasslands and increased woody cover in savannas. When direct effects of CO2 on plants were omitted, woody encroachment was muted and carbon in aboveground vegetation changed between –8 to 11% (RCP 4.5) and –22 to –6% (RCP8.5). Simulated biome changes lacked consistent large‐scale geographical patterns of change across scenarios. In Ethiopia and the Sahara/Sahel transition zone, the biome changes forecast by the aDGVM were consistent across GCMs and RCPs. Direct effects from elevated CO2 were associated with substantial increases in water use efficiency, primarily driven by photosynthesis enhancement, which may relieve soil moisture limitations to plant productivity. At the ecosystem level, interactions between fire and woody plant demography further promoted woody encroachment. We conclude that substantial future biome changes due to climate and CO2 changes are likely across Africa. Because of the large uncertainties in future projections, adaptation strategies must be highly flexible. Focused research on CO2 effects, and improved model representations of these effects will be necessary to reduce these uncertainties.
Background and aims: Individualization of treatment with peginterferon alfa and ribavirin in patients with chronic hepatitis C showed benefit in controlled trials and was implemented in treatment guidelines to increase response rates and to reduce side effects and costs. However, it is unknown whether individualization was adopted in routine daily practice and whether it translated into improved outcomes.
Methods: From a large noninterventional cohort study, clinical and virologic response data of 10,262 HCV patients who received peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin between 2003-2007 and 2008-2011 were analyzed. To account for treatment individualization, a matched-pair analysis (2,997 matched pairs) was performed. Variation in treatment duration and dosing of ribavirin were analyzed as indicators for individualization.
Results: Sustained virological response (SVR) rates were similar between 2003-2007 and 2008-2011 (62.0% vs. 63.7%). Patients with comorbidities were more abundant in the later period, (44.3% vs. 57.1%). The subsequent matched-pair analysis demonstrated higher SVR rates in the 2008-2011 period (64.3%) than in the 2003-2007 period (61.2%, p=0.008). More patients received abbreviated or extended treatment regimens in the later than the earlier period as an indicator of treatment individualization. To the same end, ribavirin doses were higher in the later period (12.6 versus 11.6 mg/kg/day). Factors independently associated with SVR included HCV genotype, low baseline viral load, younger age, route of infection, absence of concomitant diseases, lower APRI score, normal gamma-GT, higher ribavirin doses, no substitution for drug abuse, treatment duration, and treatment in the 2008-2011 period.
Conclusions: Treatment individualization with peginterferon alfa and ribavirin was implemented in daily routine between 2003-2007 and 2008-2011, SVR rates improved in the same period. These findings may be most relevant in resource-limited settings.
