The Soviet Union is remembered as a lab for socioeconomic changes on larges scales and environmental catastrophes: the Chernobyl disaster, the Aral Sea tragedy, and ecocide. However, little is known about the groundbreaking concepts and theories of Russian and early Soviet science which laid the foundation for systemic ecological thinking, environmental consciousness for nature conservation, and corresponding initiatives of the revolutionary years after 1917. The isolation of Eastern Europe that came as a result of Stalinism and the Cold War led to Soviet science developing its own scientific approaches and terminology during the 20th century. This does not only include ideological constructions and practices such as the pseudo-scientific Lysenkoism which outlawed genetics and led to disastrous effects on agriculture, the people, and the scientific community. Soviet science has also managed to continue and unfold the new concepts and interdisciplinary dynamics of the ecological turn on the threshold of the 20th century, a development which, at that time, was only sporadically noted in the West. In the context of its thematic focus on Eastern European ecological terminology, this issue discusses a selection of these concepts.

Das Forum Interdisziplinäre Begriffsgeschichte hat in seiner zwölfjährigen Geschichte immer wieder Begriffe an der Schnittstelle von Biologie sowie Gesellschaft und Kultur, insbesondere aber solche des ökologischen Diskurses thematisiert. [...] Das vorliegende, von der Slawistin Tatjana Petzer (Universität Graz) als Gastherausgeberin gestaltete Schwerpunktthema "Ecology in Eastern European Terminology" lässt sich als Fortsetzung dieser Thematiken verstehen. Die Beiträge verdeutlichen, wie Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler osteuropäischer Länder und der Sowjetunion, die oftmals zunächst im engen Kontakt mit westeuropäischen Wissenschaftsentwicklungen standen, aufgrund der späteren, vor allem im Kalten Krieg forcierten Abkoppelung eigenständige Terminologien und Konzepte entwickelten, deren Zusammenhang mit westlichen Ideen dadurch verdeckt waren, und doch mitunter auch wieder auf sie zurückwirkten. Viele der behandelten interdisziplinären Begriffe (Biogeochemie, Biogeozönose, Metabolismus, Regulation oder Geocryologie) thematisieren den heute so intensiv diskutierten Zusammenhang zwischen Ökologie und Geologie.
The present article analyzes a prominent yet relatively understudied contact space among Native American, New Zealand Maori, and aboriginal Taiwanese literatures: the struggle of indigenous peoples to negotiate optimal relationships between themselves and the natural world, particularly in light of capitalist modernity and globalization. Many indigenous narratives draw sharp distinctions between native peoples and outsiders, predictably portraying the former as protectors and the latter as destroyers of both nature and indigenous local cultures. The Native American Chickasaw writer Linda Hogan's (1947-) novel 'People of the Whale' (2008), the Maori writer Patricia Grace's (1937-) novel 'Patiki' (1986), and the aboriginal Taiwanese writer Topas Tamapima's short story "Zuihou de lieren" are no exception. But these texts also problematize notions of the so-called "ecological native." They do so most conspicuously by revealing the ambiguous relationships those peoples believed closest to nature have with the nonhuman world, that is to say their environmental ambiguity ('ecoambiguity') (Thornber 2012).
In the 20th century, the term "ecosystem" was one of the most important concepts for the biological discipline "ecology." Originally coined by the English botanist Arthur G. Tansley in an article from 1935, it is now a well-established term. The authors of the textbook 'Ecology' write, the ecosystem concept "has become a powerful tool for integrating ecology with other disciplines." But this only addresses the scientific resonance of the term. In the 1970s "ecosystem" also became an important concept for the environmental movement, for the term "ecosystem" describes nature as a whole entity, in which all things are linked together, forming a network of biotic and abiotic factors. In this sense, the "ecosystem" concept also took on a key role in the political ecology discourse. This article begins with a look at the political ecology discourse, and then focuses on the formation of the "ecosystem" concept. The terminological development of the term turns first to the linguistic definition of "ecosystem" before looking how the ecosystem became an established concept by transforming the object "lake" into the scientific object "ecosystem." Sections four and five further pursue the role of the ecosystem concept in the environmental discourse, based on the metaphor of "spaceship earth" on the one hand and of the "closing circle" on the other. Finally, the article contextualizes the "ecosystem" concept in conjunction with Claude Lefort's concept of "the political." As we will see, the political impact of the "ecosystem" concept inheres in the very term itself for it describes a wholeness that human beings are inevitably a part of even as their actions alter or disturb with the ecosystem fundamentally. In other words, human beings are both inside and outside of the "ecosystem" at the same time. This paradoxical situation is inevitably constituted by the concept "ecosystem", which is understood as a (nearly) closed system. Hence solutions to environmental problems aim at reintegrating human beings into the closed circle of the global ecosystem through technical constructions or through adapting to natural processes.
